Notes on the Railsplitters:
-Lincoln Memorial dropped a pair of matches at Sacred Heart last weekend, losing 3-0 in the opener before falling in four sets the next day. The Railsplitters recorded a season-low 14 kills on a season-worst .000 attack percentage in game one, but bounced back by racking up 40 kills on a .185 clip in game two. Overall, LMU performed admirably in its first taste of Division I competition. As a reminder, Division I and II schools compete for the same national championship in men's volleyball.
-In game two against Sacred Heart,
Joshua Riblett (Torrence, Calif.) broke his own program record for kills by recording 17 on a .205 clip. That surpassed the 16 kills he had against Lees-McRae on January 27.
-Despite Riblett having the two highest kill games in the early stages of the program,
Evan Cory (Metairie, La.) is still far and away the offensive leader for the Railsplitters. The right side hitter has 95 kills – 31 more than anyone else on the team – and averages 2.64 per set. He also leads the team in errors with 54 – 18 more than any other LMU player. Cory is currently 54th in the country in kills per set.
-The Railsplitters are ranked seventh in the nation in digs per set with 9.08.
Jorge Collazo (San Juan, Puerto Rico) has fronted that effort with a team-leading 2.31 digs per set, the 19th-most in the country, while Cory has put up 1.69 scoops per. Collazo had a program-record 20 digs at Bluefield on January 25.
-The impact that freshman setter
Ryan Iskandar (Tempe, Ariz.) is making has gone a little unnoticed. Along with leading the team in assists (264) and assists per set (7.33), Iskandar has averaged a kill per set on a .266 attack percentage while also contributing 1.42 digs per frame.
-Along with Cory and Riblett, middle hitters
Pedro Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and
Marcus Molina (Newport Beach, Calif.) are contributing 1.83 and 1.26 kills per set, respectively.
Notes on Alderson Broaddus:
-The Battlers snapped a nine-game losing streak and picked up their first win of the season with a 3-0 victory over St. Joseph's College on Sunday. In that match, Alderson Broaddus hit .303 as a team after hitting above .200 just one time in its previous five matches.
-Prior to Sunday, the Battlers had won just four combined sets this season. That included two against Lincoln Memorial in a 3-2 loss at Mary Mars Gymnasium on January 14. In that match, Alderson Broaddus had 53 kills and a .227 attack percentage compared to 51 kills on a .242 clip for LMU.
-Offense has been hard to come by for the Battlers, who rank 35th out of 42 teams in the nation in kills per set with 10.29. They are 34th in hitting percentage with a .207 mark. Alderson Broaddus is also second-to-last in the nation in aces per set with 0.65.
-Obenda Besongngem leads the Battlers with 88 kills and 2.67 per set, while Justin Glader has produced 63 with 2.03 per frame. His brother, Adam Glader, has accounted for 1.78 kills per frame, while Erik Arroyo (1.55 per) and Myles Miller (1.35 per) have also been factors. Benjamin Bravo leads Alderson Broaddus in assists with 227 total and 8.11 per set. Arroyo leads the team in digs with 2.30 per frame.
-In the first meeting against Lincoln Memorial, Besongngem led the Battlers with 17 kills, but he also had 10 errors. Miller and Adam Glader had seven kills apiece.
-The Battlers are 0-3 at home this season. They lost in straight sets to Lees-McRae and Fort Wayne while also suffering a 3-1 loss to McKendree. Alderson Broaddus follows up Friday's match against LMU with a home date against Coker on Saturday.
