Railsplitters split with Saginaw Valley State in debut at New Lamar Hennon Field

HARROGATE, Tenn. – Russell Clark (Wexford, Pa.) and Nate Stinson (Jonesboro, Ga.) homered and drove in four runs apiece, and Muta Crusoe (Bellwood, Ill.) went 4-for-4 with three doubles as Lincoln Memorial (14-14, 6-3 SAC) crushed Saginaw Valley State (6-9, 0-0 GLIAC) 16-6 Saturday afternoon in the first official game played at the new Lamar Hennon Field. Mason Ewers (Kingsport, Tenn.) homered twice and drove in all three of the team's runs in the second game of the doubleheader, but the Railsplitters only mustered four hits in falling to the Cardinals 6-3.

Lincoln Memorial achieved all the notable firsts at the new field. Brandon Jean (Franklin, Tenn.) recorded the first strikeout as he got Jason Clark swinging to lead off the game. Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa) notched the first hit with a double to left in the bottom of the first. Timmy Wages (Molin, Ill.) scored the first run, as Crusoe's first double drove him in for the first RBI. Clark connected on the first home run with his two-run shot in the fourth.

Crusoe's three doubles tied a program record, and he became the only player to accomplish the feat twice. Railsplitter hitters combined for nine doubles, which is the second-best total in program history.

Ewers' multi-home run effort was the first by a Railsplitter this season and fourth of his career.

Adam Fitzgibbon and Craig Wilson recorded two hits in each game for the Cardinals.

The Railsplitters play one more game against Saginaw Valley State Sunday at 1 p.m. back at the old Lamar Hennon Field.

Game One: Lincoln Memorial 16, Saginaw Valley State 6

Jean was outstanding on the mound for the Railsplitters, holding the Cardinals to one run in eight innings with eight strikeouts. He allowed five hits and three walks as he evened his record to 3-3. His only blemish came in the third inning when a sac fly plated Nate Blackwell, who led off the inning with a triple.

Lincoln Memorial would score 15 unanswered runs over the next five innings. Clark hit a sac fly in the bottom of the third to break a 1-1 tie, and the Railsplitters added another run in the inning on a throwing error by shortstop Jordan Swiss.

Seth Hunt (Knoxville, Tenn.) kick started a six-run fourth with a two-run double. Ewers and Augustine then followed with back-to-back RBI triples, and Clark's home run provided the final two runs.

Stinson singled home a run in the fifth to increase the lead to 10-1, and five more runs came across in the sixth. Clark singled home the first run, and Crusoe's double three batters later drove him in. Stinson's home run to center accounted for the next three runs.

Grady Wright (Fayetteville, Tenn.) connected on the team's ninth double to drive in Triston Campbell (Cumming, Ga.) to give Lincoln Memorial a 16-1 advantage.

Saginaw Valley State scored five runs in the top of the ninth against Kevin Norton (McDonough, Ga.). Five different players drove in a run in the inning as the team batted around.

Game Two: Saginaw Valley State 6, Lincoln Memorial 3

The Cardinals scored a run in the top of the first and added three more in the third as the team knocked around Dominic Morabito (Vienna, Va.). Morabito picked up two quick outs in the first before hitting the next two batters. Brendan Harrison made him pay with his first of three singles on the evening to drive in the game's first run.

Jason Clark led off the third inning with a home run to center. Three of the next four batters also recorded a hit, which led to two more runs scoring.

Ewers belted his first home run to right center in the bottom of the third to cut Saginaw Valley State's lead in half.

These would be the only two runs Trevor Friday would allow in five innings of work. The only other hit the Railsplitters picked up against him was an Eric Kalman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) single in the fourth. He also struck out four and walked three as he improved to 2-0 on the year.

The Cardinals picked up two more runs off Morabito before he was pulled in favor of Cody Hinson (Taylor Ridge, Ill.). Morabito allowed a career-most six runs and nine hits in 3.1 innings as he fell to 3-2 and picked up his first loss as a starting pitcher.

Ewers connected for his second home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Clark doubled two batters later, and Wages followed with a walk. Jake Tarbell then came on in relief for the Cardinals and ended the potential threat by getting Kalman to ground into a double play.

He also retired the Railsplitters 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to pick up his third save of the year.
