Pioneers steal the last-minute victory in 15-14 win over the Lady Railsplitters

HARROGATE, Tenn. – Tusculum's Emily Gleason capped off a five goal rally with 12 seconds remaining  as the visiting Pioneers stole the 15-14 South Atlantic Conference win away from the Lady Railsplitters Wednesday afternoon.

The loss drops LMU to 3-8 on the season and 1-4 in SAC play. Tusculum improves to 5-8 overall and 3-2 in the SAC.

The loss also spoils a career-tying performance from Zoe Zervos (Ithaca, N.Y.), who tied her career high with four goals while also gathering two ground balls and causing two turnovers. Jasmin Click (Clermont, Fla.) added in three goals while Amara Moss (Woodbridge, Va.) scored thrice in her return after missing the last few games due to an injury. Moss also had an assist, six draws won and three ground balls. Casey Kelly (Ellenwood, Ga.) added in a goal and three assists while Shannon Novak (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) netted nine saves in cage.

TC's Savannah Elliott had six goals to lead the Pioneers while Madison Malone added in five assists and five ground balls. Goalie Brooke Wagner had six saves and allowed 10 goals while fellow goalie Kaitlin Winnie lived up to her name with two saves and four goals allowed as she earned the win.

Early on it was all LMU as Click and Kennedy Buechner (Stafford, Va.) scored in the first few minutes to put LMU ahead 2-0. TC's Rachel Holmes would put the Pioneers on the board at the 21:10 mark. Moss picked up her first goal a little under five minutes later off the assist from Kelly. Holmes and Malone then scored back-to-back goals less than a minute apart to tie the game at 3-3. Kelly won the ensuing draw and 23 seconds later Zervos picked up her first goal of the game to put LMU back ahead. Tusculum then changed goalies, inserting Winnie.

The score remained 4-3 LMU for the next 4:40 until Elliott tied the game at 4-4 with her 29th goal of the season. Malone picked up a yellow card with 7:40 remaining and LMU took advantage 44 seconds later with the woman-up goal by Rachel Bernhardt (Louisville, Ky.) off the assist by Kelly. Elliott would return the favor at the 3:19 mark as she scored the woman-up goal for the Pioneers to tie the game again at 5-5. The Pioneers would take a 6-5 lead into halftime as Emily Gleason scored a third woman-up goal with 47 seconds remaining.

Tusculum won the opening draw of the second half and immediately drew a yellow card on Moss. Malone used the woman-up opportunity to find Elliot open and Elliott would score with 29:18 left in the game to put TC ahead 7-5. Kelly scored on a free position goal and Moss took the ensuing draw and ran straight at the goalie and punched it in to tie the match at 7-7 with 28:31 left. After a couple of possessions for both sides, Elliott scored her fourth goal of the day and TC regained the lead.

Click tied the game again at the 23:53 mark s she drove around the TC defender and found the corner of the net. That would spark a 5-0 LMU run over the next 8:44 and give the Lady Railsplitters the 12-8 lead. The teams then traded goals over the next five minutes. The Pioneers would then go on a run of their own, scoring four goals down the stretch to tie the game at 14-14 with 5:53 left. After a couple of quick possessions, Malone intercepted a clear attempt by Novak and the Pioneers settled down into a ball control offense. They would hold the ball for the next 3:38, until Elliott drew a double-team from the defense and found Gleason open for the goal with 12 seconds remaining in the game. Gleason then won the ensuing draw and the Pioneers ran out the clock for the win.

LMU will next travel to Brevard for a 7 p.m. Saturday meeting with the Tornados.
