HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Lincoln Memorial University men's volleyball team hit .312 as a unit and held the visiting Bryan College Lions (1-9) to a .037 mark its four-set win to open a six-match home stand at Mary Mars Gymnasium on Tuesday night. The Railsplitters (8-12) produced just 13 attack errors to the Lions' 30 and also held a 9-to-2 advantage in blocks.
Almost everyone contributed for the Railsplitters offensively.
Joshua Riblett (Torrence, Calif.) sat out the first set but still led the team with 12 kills.
Pedro Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil) added eight more, while
NyJaee Washington (Las Vegas, Nev.) and
Marcus Molina (Newport Beach, Calif.) added five apiece.
Evan Cory (Metairie, La.) set one career high with 23 assists and tied another with four service aces.
Jorge Collazo (San Juan, Puerto Rico) was the only Railsplitter not to record a kill but had a game-high 14 digs.
Will Stokes and Nathaniel Shadoan accounted for 23 of Bryan's 34 kills but were also among a trio of Lions, along with Martin Livingston, to record at least seven attack errors. Nick Scully led all players with 26 assists. All seven Bryan players finished with between four and six digs apiece.
The Railsplitters looked lethargic in dropping the first set 21-25, which marked Bryan's first set win outside of its sweep against winless Bluefield. The Lions only hit .087 in the set compared to Lincoln Memorial's .250 but used a 6-0 run to move ahead of the Railsplitters 11-8 and take the lead for good. Will Stokes recorded three service aces and two kills during the run. The Railsplitters fought back to within one point on five different occasions but could not hit home the equalizer.
Riblett and
Ryan Iskandar (Tempe, Ariz.) entered the match for the second set, which helped the Railsplitters lead nearly wire-to-wire. However, Bryan held tough until an 8-2 run gave the team some separation at 22-14. A Riblett service ace sandwiched between two Cory kills gave the Railsplitters the 25-17 set win.
Lincoln Memorial came out of the 10-minute break absolutely on fire to post one of the most dominating sets in the program's short history. The Railsplitters hit .706 as a team with 12 kills and five service aces and did not record an attacking error. The teams began the set tied 4-4 before Lincoln Memorial finished the set on a 21-7 run. The run began with six consecutive Railsplitter points to force a Bryan timeout. Carvalho hit home five of his eight kills in the set, while Cory and Iskandar each recorded six assists. Cory and Riblett also accounted for two service aces apiece.
The Lions made the fourth and final set more competitive with 10 kills, its most of any set, but were ultimately undone by 11 attack errors. That resulted in a -.027 hitting percentage. Lincoln Memorial wasn't much better at .147 but committed seven fewer attacking errors. The Railsplitters used a 9-1 run behind five Lion attack errors to take a 15-7 lead, but Bryan earned six of the next seven points to cut that lead back down to three. Lincoln Memorial took four of the next five points to move comfortably back in front and held on to win the set 25-20. Riblett had five kills in the set, including the final one that sealed the Railsplitters' victory.
The Railsplitters are back in action on Friday at 7 p.m. when they host Charleston (W.Va.) in the first of two meetings over the weekend at Mary Mars Gym.Â
