Florida Southern tops Railsplitters in seesaw battle, 9-7

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Florida Southern Moccasins (3-3) opened the fourth quarter on a 4-0 run to capture a 9-7 come-from-behind win over the Railsplitters (4-2) on Wednesday afternoon at the LMU Lacrosse Complex. The loss snapped Lincoln Memorial's program-best, four-game winning streak in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

The loss also marred stellar performances from junior midfielder Billy Kopsky (Smithtown, N.Y.) and senior goalie Joe Medel (Virginia Beach, Va.). Kopsky scored a career-high five goals on eight shots and seven shots on goal, while Medel matched his career-high mark with 19 saves.

Kopsky wasn't given much help offensively, as Nick Borriello (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) and Tylor Justin (Buffalo, N.Y.) accounted for the team's only other goals, while Kyle Arcuri (Patchogue, N.Y.) had a pair of assists. Adam Golia (Victoria, British Columbia) – the reigning South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week – was held to a season low for points (1), shots (2) and shots on goal (1).

Cody Dyer carried the Florida Southern attack with a match-high six goals on 10 shots and nine shots on goal. Austen Lison, Seth Leonard and Dalton Simpson also chipped in goals for the Mocs.

Florida Southern goalie was nearly Medel's equal, making 14 saves on 21 shots faced to move to 3-3 on the season.

Lincoln Memorial and Florida Southern, who was receiving votes in the latest USILA national poll, were never separated by more than three goals.

The Railsplitters drew first blood on a man-down goal by Kopsky at the 9:52 mark of the first, but the Mocs answered with Lison's goal just 14 seconds later. Dyer scored the first of his six goals just over a minute later to give Florida Southern the lead.

Kopsky then scored two goals in less than a one-minute span to give the Railsplitters a brief 3-2 lead. However, Dyer scored twice in the final 90 seconds of the half to send Florida Southern into the break leading 4-3.

Dyer added another goal with 13:55 remaining in the third quarter to increase the Mocs' lead to 5-3, but the Railsplitters closed the quarter on a 3-0 run to take a 6-5 lead into the fourth.

Florida Southern dominated the final quarter to escape Harrogate with a victory. The Mocs used goals from Leonard (14:14) and Simpson (13:13) as well as two more from Dyer to power a 4-0 run and take a 9-6 lead with less than five minutes remaining in regulation.

Kopsky finally ended that run with his fifth goal of the match with 3:56 remaining, but it was too late for the Railsplitters to make a comeback bid.

Florida Southern won 14 of the match's 20 face-offs. The other statistical categories were neck-and-neck, as the two teams posted 37 shots apiece. The Railsplitters had 24 turnovers compared to 20 for the Mocs. Lincoln Memorial went 21-for-25 on clears while holding Florida Southern to a 17-for-26 effort in that department, and also accumulated a 29-26 edge in groundballs.

The Railsplitters open South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday when they travel to Salisbury, North Carolina to face the Catawba Indians at 3 p.m.
