Lady Railsplitters drop SAC doubleheader at Newberry to end 2017 season

NEWBERRY, S.C. – After combining for 20 runs and 25 hits in Thursday's doubleheader sweep against Mars Hill, the Lady Railsplitters (23-22, 6-14 SAC) couldn't replicate that effort and were swept by the Newberry Wolves (31-14, 14-6 SAC) to bring the 2017 season to a close on Saturday at the Smith Road Complex.

Lincoln Memorial mustered just eight hits and two runs against the Newberry pitching staff to finish in a tie with Queens for eighth place in the SAC standings. The Lady Railsplitters split their regular-season series with the Royals, but Queens earned the final spot in the SAC tournament by virtue of its split with Wingate, who swept Lincoln Memorial.

The Wolves entered Saturday's doubleheader with just seven home runs in 18 SAC games, but blasted three homers to power a 10-1 win in six innings in game one. Newberry hit two more home runs in game two and staved off a late rally to complete the sweep with a 6-1 victory in game two.

The two losses dropped Lincoln Memorial to 13-10 all-time against Newberry, who swept the Lady Railsplitters at the Smith Road Complex for the second consecutive time.

Game One: Newberry 10, Lincoln Memorial 1 (6 innings)

Newberry starter Devon Morrison (18-5) allowed just two hits, one unearned run and didn't walk a batter in a complete-game effort to notch her 18th win of the season.

The Wolves finished with eight hits in the contest and six went for extra bases, including three home runs. Clean-up hitter Haley Simonds led that effort by going 2-for-4 with a pair of two-run home runs, the second of which ended the game in the bottom of the sixth.

It was a tough game offensively for the Lady Railsplitters, who finished 2-for-21 at the plate and went down in order in four of their six offensive innings. Dakotah Fraley led off the game with a single, but Lincoln Memorial wouldn't get another hit until Ty-Kella Goins' leadoff single in the fourth.

Brianna Taylor (15-11) took the loss after allowing six hits and five earned runs with two strikeouts and two walks over three innings of work. Justice Smith tossed 2.1 innings of relief and allowed just one run, but also walked three batters.

A hit-by-pitch and a nine-pitch walk came back to haunt Lincoln Memorial in the bottom of the first, as Rachel Marion laced a double to centerfield to score both runners and give the Wolves an early 2-0 lead.

Newberry tacked on two more runs in the home half of the second. Mallory Gerndt kicked off the inning with a one-out single and scored on Allison Van Atta's double. With runners on second and third later in the frame, a failed pickoff attempt at third allowed another run to score to make it 4-0.

The Lady Railsplitters got on the board in the fourth. Goins led off with a single to notch LMU's final hit of the ballgame and BriAnna Schrimpf was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. A throwing error then allowed a run to score to cut the deficit to 4-1.

The Wolves busted the game open in the bottom of the fifth. Simonds hit the first of her two two-run home runs to increase the deficit to 6-1. After a walk, Myranda Dills blasted another two-run bomb over the wall in left center to make it 8-1.

Newberry ended the game early in the bottom of the sixth on Simonds' second two-run dinger.

Game Two: Newberry 6, Lincoln Memorial 1

Goins went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Allie Jones added two hits with a double, but the Lady Railsplitters left eight runners stranded on base and went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position in the contest. Fraley and Meredith Johnson also added hits for Lincoln Memorial.

Christina Linton, Natalie Willis and Dills led Newberry's 11-hit effort. Linton went a perfect 4-for-4 with a pair of runs and a homer, while Willis added three hits with a double. Dills went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Simonds also homered to finish with three in the doubleheader.

Smith (8-9) was pegged with the loss after allowing six hits, four runs and two walks over 3.2 innings. Taylor didn't fare much better, giving up five hits and two runs with two strikeouts in 2.1 innings of relief.

Emily Marchbanks (11-9) pitched the Wolves to victory by allowing just six hits and one run in a complete game. She struck out three and walked three to nab her 11th win of the season.

Back-to-back singles from Linton and Willis put the Wolves in business in the bottom of the first. After striking out Hailey Drawe, Smith walked Simonds and Marion in the next two at-bats to bring the first run home. Dills' groundout then scored Willis to make it a 2-0 game.

A pair of solo home runs helped the Wolves increase their lead in the third and fourth inning. Simonds led off the third with her third home run of the afternoon before Linton slashed a two-out dinger in the fourth to give Newberry a 4-0 cushion.

The Wolves tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth on Morgan Sweeney's two-out double down the left-field line.

The Lady Railsplitters had a chance to cut into the deficit in the sixth after Fraley led off with a single and Jennifer Moose drew a one-out walk, but a groundout and a fly out ended the threat.

Newberry then added an insurance run in the bottom half of that inning with a sac fly by Marion.

Lincoln Memorial pieced together a bit of a rally in the seventh, using a pair of a singles and a walk to load the bases with one out. Goins drove in the Lady Railsplitters' only run of the contest with a two-out single before Moose flew out to center to end the game.
