Lady Railsplitters fall 21-10 at Coker, Roache has third hat trick of season

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Heather Roache (Vero Beach, Fla.) posted her third hat trick of the season as LMU fell in the 2017 season finale to host Coker 21-10 Saturday afternoon.

Roache had three goals to lead the team. Casey Kelly (Ellenwood, Ga.) had two goals and won a game-high six draw controls. Zoe Zervos (Ithaca, N.Y.) also had two goals. Rachel Bernhardt (Louisville, Ky.), Amara Moss (Woodbridge, Va.) and Kennedy Buechner (Stafford, Va.) each had a goal apiece. Defender McKenzie Edds (Maynardville, Tenn.) caused three turnovers in her final appearance while goalie Shannon Novak (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) had five ground balls and twelve saves in the loss.

LMU went 10-23 from the field with ten of those shots being on goal. They also won 13 draw controls, picked up 13 ground balls and caused 15 turnovers. Coker was 21-29 from the field with 33 of those shots being on goal. The Cobras had 27 ground balls, caused 22 turnovers and won 15 draw controls.

Coker was led by Claudia Jenkins and Faith Kent with six goals each. Kent also led the team with two assists. Marabeth Durden won five draw controls while Haley McCusker had four goals, five ground balls and caused seven turnovers.

The Cobras rolled out to a quick 2-0 lead before Roach picked up her first goal of the day with the free position goal at the 24:03 mark. McCusker and Jenkins would then combine for five Coker goals before Zervos scored with 15:06 remaining. Jenkins would score 30 seconds later on a free position goal to put Coker ahead 8-2 before LMU had a pair of free position goals from Zervos and Moss and a goal from Buechner to cut the lead to 8-5. Coker then went on a 6-1 run to close out the half, with Bernhardt scoring LMU's lone goal in that stretch.

Coker would outscore LMU 7-4 in the second half. LMU's goals in the half came from Roache (18:46 and 3:04) and Kelly (10:40 and 5:54) but it was not enough as Coker went on for the 21-10 win.

LMU ends their third season of competition with a 6-9 overall record and a 2-6 record in South Atlantic Conference play. The six wins doubled the three wins from 2016. Another first this season was the first SAC win over Newberry on March 4. Two of the six SAC losses were by one goal.

This year's team significantly upped their offensive output from 2016, earning 232 points and scoring 183 goals. They also won 204 draw controls, a program high. Individually, Kelly set new program records for points in a season with 46 and caused turnovers with 27. Click's 12 free position goals were a new school record, as was Novak's 59 ground balls.
