Augustine powers Railsplitters in 13-0 SAC tournament win over Newberry

KODAK, Tenn. – Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa) launched a pair of three-run homers and drove in a career-high six runs as second-seeded Lincoln Memorial (31-17) remained scorching hot with a 13-0 blasting of third-seeded Newberry (32-20) on day two of the 2017 Pilot/Flying J South Atlantic Conference Baseball Championship at Smokies Stadium. The Railsplitters advance to play top-seeded Catawba Sunday at noon on Sunday. The winner will advance to Monday's championship round while the loser will play an elimination game Sunday night at 7:30 p.m.

Game Highlights

With the 13-run effort, the Railsplitters put up a double-digit run total for the tenth time in 11 games. The team has also racked up at least 11 hits for the 11th time in 12 games after totaling 17 Saturday. Newberry has been the victim of four of these double digit performances.

Augustine's multi-homer effort was his second of the season. The All-SAC first team selection finished 4-for-4 and was a triple short of the cycle. The junior also scored three times. He has now scored 67 runs for the season, which is tied for the most in program history.

Seth Hunt (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished 3-for-5 and scored twice. Nate Stinson (Jonesboro, Ga.) went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Four other Railsplitters also recorded two hits.

Ethan Elliott (Knoxville, Tenn.) twirled his second career complete game shutout and first of the season. Derek Olenchuk's single in the sixth was Newberry's only hit off the lefty through the first eight innings. Elliott struck out a season-high 10 on his way to picking up his fifth win of the year. His other complete game shutout came against Newberry in 2016.

Newberry's only other hit was a single by Jeff Sneed to lead off the ninth.

The two hits allowed were the fewest by Lincoln Memorial's pitching staff since a one-hit shutout at Anderson March 6, 2011.

Evan Estridge, an All-SAC honorable mention selection, again struggled against Lincoln Memorial. The Railsplitters rocked him to the tune of eight runs and 12 hits through five innings. The freshman was pounded for seven runs and eight hits in three innings in his start against these same Railsplitters two weeks ago. Estridge is 5-1 with a 3.00 ERA against all other opponents.

Hunt singled to lead off the game and Mason Ewers (Kingsport, Tenn.) doubled before Augustine kicked off the scoring with a three-run homer.

Augustine doubled in the third and scored on a Timmy Wages (Molin, Ill.) double two batters later.

Lincoln Memorial added four more runs in the fifth to take a commanding 8-0 lead. Eric Kalman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Tyler Adams (Woodstock, Ga.) had RBI singles, and Stinson drove in the other two with a double to right center.

The Railsplitter scoring barrage continued in the seventh with five more runs. Stinson and Ewers each pushed singles through the left side to drive in runs, and Augustine capped off the scoring the way it began—with a three-run homer.
