HARROGATE, Tenn. – Lincoln Memorial (22-16, 13-5 SAC) overcame a seven-run deficit in the fifth inning against Carson-Newman with 19 unanswered runs to sweep the series over the Eagles (19-20, 7-11 SAC) and move into a tie for first place in the South Atlantic Conference standings. Every Railsplitter starter recorded at least one hit for the second straight game as the team set a new season high with 21.
Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa) hit his first career grand slam in the fifth to jump start Lincoln Memorial's nine-run rally, and
Muta Crusoe (Bellwood, Ill.) launched a two-run homer later in the inning to put the Railsplitters ahead for good at 9-7.
Tyler Adams (Woodstock, Ga.) went 4-for-4 with three RBI, while four more Railsplitters added three hits apiece. Augustine reached base four times, going 3-for-5 with the grand slam and scored four runs.
Timmy Wages (Molin, Ill.) also reached base four times and drove in five runs.
Chase Randolph (Harriman, Tenn.) picked up the win in relief as he held Carson-Newman scoreless over 4.1 innings of work.
Greg Jones led Carson-Newman with three hits, while five other Eagles recorded two base knocks. Of those, Cade Snapp and Brett Langhorne drove in two runs apiece while Snapp also doubled and scored twice.
Carson-Newman scored all seven runs off Railsplitter starter
Dominic Morabito (Vienna, Va.). The first five came in the third as Paul Kirby opened the scoring with a sac fly followed by three straight two-out hits to bring in the next four runs.
Two innings later, back-to-back doubles by Jones and Snapp resulted in another run. Brendan Campbell's two-out single two batters later brought in the team's seventh run.
Eagles starting pitcher Grant Rabbitts cruised through the first four innings, allowing just one hit, before
Eric Kalman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Crusoe singled and doubled to start the bottom half of the fifth. Grant Valentine then replaced Rabbitts on the mound and promptly hit Adams to load the bases.
Seth Hunt (Knoxville, Tenn.) singled in Lincoln Memorial's first run two batters later.
With two outs, Augustine crushed a Valentine pitch over the right center wall to pull the Railsplitters back to 7-5. This started a string of seven straight batters to reach base, which led to four more runs. Crusoe's homer capped the scoring as he broke a 7-7 tie with a two-run shot to left center. When it was all said and done, Lincoln Memorial sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning.
The hot hitting continued over the next three innings as the Railsplitters added five runs in the sixth, three in the seventh and two more in the eighth. Wages produced three run-scoring singles over these frames that drove in five. Adams added two more RBI hits that drove in three more.
Lincoln Memorial welcomes King to Lamar Hennon Field Wednesday to conclude a game originally suspended on March 29 followed by a full contest. The Railsplitters will conclude their home schedule over the weekend with a three-game series against Newberry, who is also tied for first in the SAC.
