HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Lady Railsplitters (4-2, 1-2 SAC) committed a season-high 28 attack errors to suffer a straight-set loss at Coker (5-5, 1-2 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action Friday night at the DeLoach Center. Lincoln Memorial dropped its second consecutive match by scores of 20-25, 23-25 and 22-25.
The loss ended Lincoln Memorial's unblemished all-time record in the series against Coker, dropping the Lady Railsplitters to 8-1 since the two teams' first meeting in 2013. It was the first time in those nine matchups that the Cobras have taken more than one set off the Lady Railsplitters.
Attack errors ultimately did the Lady Railsplitters in as Lincoln Memorial averaged nearly 10 per set while finishing with a season-worst .026 attack percentage. Coker wasn't much better, but still managed to rack up 38 kills with only 22 errors, good for a .102 clip.
Kiera Holland was the only LMU player to finish with more than five kills, accumulating 15 to go along with 14 digs. The senior outside also accounted for eight errors.
Rylee Storms added five kills and 12 digs, while
Alicia Kessler made the most of her five attempts, putting away three kills.
Lindsey Nartker had a forgettable match, finishing with two kills and eight errors while contributing 11 digs.
Junior libero
Erica Whiteaker maintained her nation-leading digs per set pace by scooping up 31 digs in the three-set contest.
Samantha Cash finished with 28 assists and six digs.
Coker was led to victory by a balanced offensive attack. Taylor du Bray had a team-high 11 kills with 24 digs but also made 11 errors. Chloe Attram added eight kills on a .500 hitting percentage, while Madison Bingle notched seven kills and 11 digs. Annie Mansfield chipped in six kills. Christen Bragg led all players with 32 assists to go along with 19 digs.
The Lady Railsplitters gave away 12 points on attack errors in set one, finishing with a -.060 hitting percentage. A 5-0 run put the Cobras ahead 10-5 early, and they continued to lead by that margin after a kill by Bingle made it 14-9. However, Lincoln Memorial fought all the way back to tie the match at 14-14 on an ace from Cash. The Lady Railsplitters never took the lead, though, while a service error pushed Coker ahead 22-18. The Cobras later clinched the victory on an LMU attack error.
The Lady Railsplitters led early in the second set, but the Cobras won three straight rallies to pull ahead 15-12 on two kills by du Bray and an LMU miscue. Lincoln Memorial never regained the lead after that, but did use a 3-0 flurry to tie the set at 23-23. But Coker had the answer once more, using a kill and ace from du Bray to take a 2-0 lead.
The Cobras virtually controlled the third and final set from start to finish, assuming leads of 14-9 and 17-12. The Lady Railsplitters tied the set two times after that, but could never get over the hump and take the lead. The Cobras won five of the last seven rallies in the set, finishing off the sweep with a kill by du Bray.
The Lady Railsplitters return to action on Saturday, facing the Newberry Wolves at Eleazer Arena at 1 p.m.
