Lady Railsplitters fall to Lenoir-Rhyne on 83rd-minute goal, 1-0

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Bears (4-2-1, 1-1-1 SAC) scored in the 83rd minute to hand the Lady Railsplitters (4-4, 0-3 SAC) a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action on Saturday at the LMU Soccer Complex.

Despite creating a number of quality scoring chances, Lincoln Memorial was kept scoreless in SAC play and handed its third 1-0 defeat in the team's past five matches.

The Lady Railsplitters played without injured starting defender Gabby Garcia and lost leading scorer Caroline Souza to injury mid-match, but turned in an inspired effort in spite of that adversity.

The match looked to be heading to overtime until Lenoir-Rhyne scored the game-winning goal off of a set piece in the 83rd minute, as Rachel Fischer finished off a header on a free kick sent into the box by Christina Shimshock.

That was the only blemish on an otherwise stellar performance by the LMU defense and junior goalkeeper Brooke Taylor, who made four saves in the contest while facing 17 shot attempts.

The Lady Railsplitters created their best scoring chance in the 26th minute when a long pass from the midfield set up a breakaway for Melissa Carpenter. However, Carpenter's shot attempt scooted just left of the goal to keep the match scoreless.
