No. 6 Railsplitters kick off new year with home bout against Anderson

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The No. 6 Railsplitters (12-1, 6-0 SAC) will try to extend their Tex Turner Arena winning streak to 16 games and remain unbeaten in South Atlantic Conference play when they kick off the new year by hosting the Anderson Trojans (4-9, 2-3 SAC) on Wednesday night at 8 p.m.

Lincoln Memorial rebounded from its first loss of the season on Saturday, pulling away from Lenoir-Rhyne in the second half to capture a 72-55 win. Despite the 17-point victory, there were still some lingering side effects from the Railsplitters' loss to No. 1 Northwest Missouri State. LMU matched a season-low mark by scoring just 28 points on a 34 percent clip in the first half, and led by only four points at the break as a result. The Railsplitters improved drastically in the second half with 44 points on a 60 percent effort, but allowed the Bears to convert 56 percent of their shots over that same span.

In spite of that, the Railsplitters became the first SAC team to reach six conference wins while toppling Lenoir-Rhyne for the 16th consecutive time. Lincoln Memorial is one of just two SAC teams without a conference loss yet this season along with No. 2 nationally ranked Queens.

Now the Railsplitters return to Tex Turner Arena for the next two games, where they have been absolutely dominant so far this season. Lincoln Memorial – winners of 15 straight home games dating back to the 2016-17 campaign – is 6-0 at Tex Turner Arena with an average margin of victory of 42.5 points. That includes a 156-69 triumph over Mars Hill in a game in which LMU broke the SAC record for points and three-pointers. The Railsplitters are averaging 108 points per game and shooting nearly 60 percent from the field at home this season.

Lincoln Memorial kicks off that brief two-game home stand as well as the 2018 portion of the schedule against an Anderson team that has struggled in its third season under head coach Jeff Brookman. The Trojans started 2-8 with three consecutive SAC losses before righting the ship with wins over Newberry and Catawba. However, Anderson dropped a 105-99 decision at Lees-McRae on Saturday to slip to 4-9 overall.

The Trojans have lost a bunch of close games. Along with that six-point loss on Saturday, Anderson suffered three-point losses at the hands of Erskine, USC Aiken and Johnson C. Smith as well as nine-point setbacks against Lander and Limestone. In fact, despite the Trojans' 4-9 record, the team has been outscored by just 22 total points this season.

Anderson doesn't stand out in any particular statistical category. While playing at the slowest pace in the SAC, the Trojans are averaging 75 points per game on 45 percent shooting and a 37.5 percent mark from three. Anderson is surrendering 76.5 points per game on 44 percent shooting. In addition to that, the Trojans average the fewest rebounds, steals and blocks per game in the SAC, and are getting outrebounded by an average of 4.3 boards per game.

The Trojans are powered by the backcourt duo of Randall Shaw and Gage Ellis. Shaw is putting up 17.1 points per game but has yet to rediscover his shooting form from last season, when he poured in nearly 21 points per game on 47 percent clip. The junior is shooting just 39.7 percent from the field this season, including a 31 percent mark from three. Ellis has been sensational, though, scoring 15.4 points per game on 53 percent shooting.

That tandem is backed by Jeremy Bouton, Maurice Howard and Josh Livingston. Bouton is contributing 11.3 points and a team-leading 6.4 rebounds per contest, while Howard has added 8.2 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. Livingston has chipped in 7.2 points and 4.4 rebounds per game as a freshman.

The Railsplitters have won the last eight matchups against Anderson, including three straight at Tex Turner Arena. Lincoln Memorial, which owns a 10-7 advantage in the all-time series, swept last season's series with relative ease, winning 93-71 at home and 94-77 on the road.

Tip-off between Lincoln Memorial and Anderson is set for 8 p.m. Live stats and video links are available at www.lmurailsplitters.com, while fans can also listen along with Voice of the Railsplitters Rusty Peace at WLMU 91.3 The Gap.
