Ross Mathis' 25 points power LMU women past Mars Hill 91-62

MARS HILL, N.C. – Ross Mathis led all scorers with a career-high 25 points as the Lincoln Memorial University women's basketball team reached the 90-point mark for the third time this season in their 91-62 win at Mars Hill Wednesday evening.

LMU (12-8, 8-6 South Atlantic Conference) went 43.9 percent (36-82) from the field, 37.5 percent (12-32) from three point range and 77.8 percent (7-9) from the free throw line. Mars Hill (1-20, 0-13 SAC), who only dressed out five players due to injuries, went 22-57 (38.6%) from the field, 7-25 (28.0%) from behind the arc and 11-21 (52.4%) from the charity stripe for the game. The Lady Railsplitters out-rebounded the Lions by a 58-29 margin.

Mathis led LMU with 25 points and eight assists while Rachel Griffith chipped in 15 points. Elizabeth Jones and Jordan Brightwell led all players with 10 rebounds each, which were career highs for both players.

LMU opened up the game with a 14-1 start. Mathis started things off with a three-pointer on the first possession for the Blue and Gray. The Lady Railsplitters extended the lead to 25-5, with all five Lion points coming off of free throws. Mariah Johnson finally got MHU's first basket from the field with the short jumper with one minute left, followed by a three-pointer from Gianikos with four seconds left to cut the LMU lead to 25-10 at the end of the period.

The Lady Railsplitters extended the lead to 19 points with a basket by Jachimczuk with 8:02 remaining. Despite not being able to substitute, the Lions kept up a quick pace and cut the lead to 35-24 midway through the stanza. Down the stretch the teams traded baskets and LMU led 42-28 at the half.

LMU came out firing in the third quarter and opened up with a 12-2 run, with Mathis scoring eight quick points during the run. The Lions kept up the fast pace early, but midway through the period the fatigue began to take its toll and they started to run more half court offense. Mathis ended up exploding for 16 points in the quarter as LMU began to open up the lead a bit as they led 75-46 at the end of the third period.

The teams traded baskets for the majority of the fourth quarter as LMU maintained their 30+ point lead. The Lions scored late on a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 91-62 and LMU ran out the clock.
