Lady Railsplitters drop heartbreaker to Tusculum in overtime 1-0

HARROGATE, Tenn. – Heartbreak found its way to the LMU Soccer Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

Despite dominating nearly every phase of its South Atlantic Conference match from start to finish, the Lincoln Memorial women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 overtime loss to Tusculum on Kate Guildford's 93rd-minute winner.

The loss snapped a three-match winning streak for the Lady Railsplitters (8-4, 4-3 SAC), who were vying for their first stretch of four straight wins since 2014. Tusculum (7-4-3, 4-2-2 SAC) earned its third consecutive win over Lincoln Memorial and improved to 16-10-3 in the all-time series with the victory.

Guildford's game-winner was a stunning end to a match that the Lady Railsplitters completely controlled. With an up-tempo pressure defense, Lincoln Memorial thoroughly dominated possession and kept the Pioneers pinned on the defensive throughout, finishing with a commanding 19-8 margin in shot attempts and a 6-3 edge in corners.

The Lady Railsplitters reached peak form as the match neared the end of regulation. From the time leading scorer Jessica Cravero checked back into the match in the 64th minute until the conclusion of the second half, Lincoln Memorial built multiple dangerous scoring chances and fired off 10 shots compared to only one for the Pioneers.

LMU nearly scored on several occasions, but none was closer than with just over 30 seconds left in regulation, when Itzel Ballesteros found herself in space inside the box. However, the junior striker's shot – one of her match-leading seven tries – skirted just left of the net. Cravero also had a pair of shots on goal over that closing stretch, but Tusculum keeper Bailey Bosler, who made four saves in the match, blocked both attempts.

While the Lady Railsplitters let untold scoring chances slip away, the Pioneers converted one of their few just two minutes into overtime. Brooke Radcliffe set the goal in motion when she won the ball on Tusculum's offensive end and made a pass back to the middle of the field for Guildford, who turned around her defender and chipped it over the head of LMU keeper Ann-Marie O'Connell to propel the Pioneers to victory.

The Lady Railsplitters were shutout for just the second time all season and the first time since a 2-0 loss at Young Harris on September 5 despite producing their fourth-most shots of the season.
