Box Score 2 SUMTER, S.C. – Xavier Marti and
Julia Valls led the way as the LMU tennis teams competed in the ITA Southeast Regional last weekend. Marti reached the quarterfinal round in men's play while on the women's side Valls reached the round of 16.
On the men's side, Marti defeated Queens' Sebastian Meum 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, Flagler's Luca Bolla (who was seeded ninth overall) 6-7, 6-4, 6-0, and Belmont Abbey's Zachary Blythe 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 to reach the round of 16. In the round of 16 Marti won over fifth-seeded Arnold Kokulewski in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 before being forced to retire in his quartfinal match vs. Newberry's Edison Ambarzumjan due to an injury.
David Segarra fell in his first round singles match to Rory Gaydon from Barton College 0-6, 6-1, 6-4, but together with teammate
Jake Tuchmann they won their first round doubles match 7-5 over a duo from Limestone before falling to a duo from Lander by a 6-2 margin.
In women's action, Valls earned a bye in the first round and then went on to defeat Newberry's Lucy Spice 6-2, 6-0 and North Georgia's Cibeles Ziddy 6-7, 6-2, 6-4. In the round of 16 she faced the tournament's top seeded player, Beatriz Lopez from Columbus State, to whom she fell 6-1, 6-1.
Kristen Vogel,
Marta Pinol and
Julia Loos also reached the round of 64, with Vogel winning over USC-Aiken's Alice Neves 6-2, 7-5 in the first round before falling to ninth-seeded (and eventual tournament winner) Vaishali Jorge from North Georgia 6-3, 6-4.
Loos won in three sets over Lander's Lindsey Wiggins 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 before falling to second-seeded Tzu-Hsun Hsu from Wingate 0-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 64.
Marta Pinol defeated Limestone's Camille Haus 7-5, 6-3 in the first round before falling to Columbus State's Candice Paya, the tournament's number-three seed, by a 6-1, 6-1 margin.
In doubles play Vogel and
Amanda Dahlstrom defeated a duo from Barton 6-1 in the round of 64 and then fell to fifth-seeded Oriana Labaqui and Ana Rodriguez from Young Harris 6-2.
Barring any late additions between now and the end of the fall 2018 playing window on Oct. 20, the teams will next take the court on Feb. 2, when they host the University of the Cumberlands.
