ANDERSON, S.C. – After suffering their most lopsided loss in a decade this past weekend, the Railsplitters (5-3, 2-1 SAC) will try to rebound with a road trip to Anderson (5-3, 1-1 SAC) on Wednesday evening.
Tip-off in the midweek South Atlantic Conference showdown at the Abney Center is set for 7:30 p.m. Video and live stat links are available at www.lmurailsplitters.com, while fans can also follow along with live updates via the official LMU athletics Twitter page, @LMURailsplitter.
Notes on Anderson
- The Trojans improved to 4-0 on their home court on Saturday with a 79-65 out-of-conference win over Johnson C. Smith. Gage Ellis powered that victory with a sensational 27-point, 10-rebound performance, while Andrew Boynton and Jeremy Bouton had 13 and 12 points, respectively.
- Anderson has won four of its last five games overall. The only loss over that span was a heartbreaking 79-77 setback at nationally-ranked Queens on December 1. In that game, Josh Livingston had a look at the potential game-winning three-pointer with a second left, but missed the mark.
- Ellis leads Anderson and ranks third in the SAC in scoring with 20.6 points per game. The senior guard is shooting a sizzling 60 percent from the field while averaging 4.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.
- Senior guard Randall Shaw is second on the team in scoring with 11.6 points per game. However, after starting the first six games of the season, Shaw sat out the loss against Queens and played only 17 minutes against Johnson C. Smith. He has combined for only nine points in his last two appearances on 2-for-15 shooting.
- Bouton is providing 11.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, while Shawn Benard is chipping in 10.6 points and 4.3 rebounds per appearance. Livingstone is also in double figures with 10.1 points per game while shooting 57 percent from the field.
- Anderson commits the fewest turnovers per game in the South Atlantic Conference with just 10.3. The Trojans also lead the league in free-throw percentage with a 79.5 percent mark.
- Anderson is not a particularly explosive offensive team, ranking ninth in the SAC in points per game with 78.5, ninth in three-pointers per game with 7.5 and 10th in three-point percentage at 32.6 percent. The Trojans are fifth in the league in overall field-goal percentage, though, at 45.5 percent.
- Defensively, Anderson is allowing a league-low 70.1 points per game. That is mostly a product of pace instead of defensive efficiency, though, as opponents are shooting 44 percent from the field against the Trojan defense.
Last Time Out
The Railsplitters visited No. 16/21 Queens on Saturday for a rematch of the last two Southeast Regional championships in what was billed as one of the must-watch, early-season Division II men's basketball games.
Unfortunately, that game fell well short of the expectations as Queens handed Lincoln Memorial its worst loss since 2008 and snapped the Railsplitters' 36-game SAC winning streak with a 90-62 win at the Levine Center in Charlotte, N.C.
The Railsplitters jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but it went straight downhill from there as the Royals took the lead for good with a 15-0 run and led by at least 20 points for the final 10 minutes of regulation. Queens shot 51 percent in the game, including a 12-for-20 mark from three, while Lincoln Memorial shot 38 percent from the field, 22 percent from three and turned it over 18 times.
Kamaran Calhoun led LMU with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting, while
Cornelius Taylor and
Anthony Brown added 10 points apiece, albeit on a combined 7-for-20 shooting.
The loss also snapped the Railsplitters' season-long four-game winning streak that started on November 20.
Road Woes
The Railsplitters have simply not been anywhere near the same team on the road that they are at home.
Lincoln Memorial has suffered all three of its losses this season on the road, where the team is averaging 73.0 points per game on 40 percent shooting and a 27 percent mark from three-point range. On top of that, the Railsplitters are grabbing only 38.8 rebounds per game.
Those numbers stand in stark contrast to the ones the Railsplitters have put up at Tex Turner Arena, where they are averaging 99.0 points per game on 49 percent shooting and a 44 percent clip from three. The team is also collecting 47.0 rebounds per game on its home court and averaging only 11.7 turnovers compared to 16.0 on the road.
Home for the Holidays
After Wednesday, the Railsplitters will play six of their next eight games at Tex Turner. That includes a string of four straight that starts on Saturday against Wingate.
