Notes on the Crusaders
- It's been a nightmare season so far for North Greenville, which has lost 10 consecutive games since winning its opener at North Georgia on November 9. That includes an 0-5 start to Conference Carolinas play.
- Of those 10 straight setbacks, only three have been decided by single digits – a 66-65 overtime loss to Southern Wesleyan, a 73-72 loss to Belmont Abbey and an 81-78 loss at Lees-McRae just before the holiday break.
- The Crusaders have struggled mightily on both ends of the court. Offensively, they are shooting a measly 42 percent with a 31 percent mark from three. Defensively, NGU is allowing 47 percent shooting and a 39 percent clip from three. The team has been outscored by an average of 14.6 points per game, which is the seventh-worst scoring margin in the country.
- Sophomore Kovi Tate leads the Crusaders with 14.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. The forward is shooting 49 percent from the field.
- Seniors Roderick Howell and Daniel Burchette are chipping in 12.4 and 11.3 points per game, respectively. Howell is adding 7.7 rebounds per game and leads the team in shooting efficiency at 61.4 percent.
- The Crusaders hit the fewest three-pointers per game (5.7) in Conference Carolinas.
- North Greenville crashes the offensive glass hard and leads its conference with 13.3 offensive rebounds per game.
- Dating back to the end of the 2017-18 season, the Crusaders have lost 13 of their last 15 games.
Last Time Out
The Railsplitters ended the 2018 portion of their schedule on a high note, canning the third-most three-pointers in program history (19) while authoring a 31-6 run that bridged the first and second half in an 87-67 win over Kentucky Wesleyan on December 19 at Tex Turner Arena.
Four players hit multiple threes to help Lincoln Memorial head into the break on a three-game winning streak.
Cornelius Taylor led the charge with 23 points on six triples to go along with a game-high six assists.
Cameron Henry went 4-for-4 from three to score 16.
Julius Brown added five threes to tally 15 points.
Lincoln Memorial also did its part on the defensive end, holding the Panthers to a dismal 35 percent shooting, including a 3-for-13 effort from three, in the second half.
Tip-Ins
- Lincoln Memorial has not lost a regular-season home game since December 17, 2016, but it's been even longer since the Railsplitters have suffered a regular-season home loss against a nonconference foe. That last occurred during head coach
Josh Schertz's first season leading the Railsplitters in a 76-74 overtime loss to Ohio Valley in December 2008. That is one of only two nonconference home losses for Lincoln Memorial during Schertz's tenure.
- Henry has been locked in of late, scoring double figures in each of his last three appearances. The redshirt-freshman has set a new career high in back-to-back games, following up a 15-point performance against Wingate with that 16-point outburst against Kentucky Wesleyan.
- Taylor is tied for third in the South Atlantic Conference in scoring with 19.4 points per game. The redshirt-junior has hit double digits in all 11 of his appearances this season and surpassed the 20-point threshold six times.
- Lincoln Memorial will be trying for its second four-game winning streak of the season after piecing together four straight wins from November 20 to December 1.
- Another youngster, true freshman
Courvoisier McCauley, has emerged as a viable offensive weapon in recent weeks. McCauley has scored at least 10 points in three of his last five appearances, highlighted by a career-high 16 at Anderson. He's tied for third on the team with 15 made threes.
- Tuesday will be LMU's first New Year's Day game since 2004, when the Railsplittters visited Cumberland in a 65-55 loss in Williamsburg, Ky. Since then, Lincoln Memorial has played four times on January 2, most recently in a loss at Bellarmine in 2016.
- The Railsplitters remain dominant defensively, ranking 19th in the nation in field-goal percentage defense with a 39.6 percent mark. That has been aided by 4.8 blocks per game – the 17th-highest total nationally.
- Lincoln Memorial is 10th in the country in three-pointers made per game with 11.6. Taylor leads the team in that department and ranks 16th in the country with 3.55.
Series History
- Tuesday will serve as the first meeting between Lincoln Memorial and North Greenville since the two squads clashed in the opening round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament at Tex Turner Arena. The Railsplitters dominated that game from start to finish in a 95-62 win.
- All told, LMU is 6-2 overall against the Crusaders, who haven't bested the Railsplitters since 2007.
- Lincoln Memorial is 4-1 all-time in the series at home.
