No. 16/21 Royals roll 90-62 to snap Railsplitters' 36-game SAC winning streak

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Saturday's much-anticipated rematch of the last two NCAA Division II Southeast Regional championship games didn't come close to living up to the hype.

Led by Daniel Carr's game-high 22 points, the No. 16/21 Queens Royals (9-2, 3-0 SAC) connected on 12 three-pointers and held Lincoln Memorial (5-3, 2-1 SAC) to 38 percent shooting to snap the Railsplitters' 36-game South Atlantic Conference regular-season winning streak with a dominant 90-62 win inside of the Levine Center.

The 28-point loss is Lincoln Memorial's largest since a 29-point loss against Wingate on February 2, 2008 and the single biggest margin of defeat of the Josh Schertz era. It stands as only the third loss by 20 or more since Schertz took over the program prior to the 2008-09 campaign.

"First off, let me credit Queens on an outstanding performance," Schertz said. "They were every bit as good as we were bad.

"We just didn't do anything close to good enough to be competitive today," he added. "It's incredibly disappointing to have a performance like that but there is nothing we can do outside of own it, learn from it, and move on by getting back to work to prepare for a very good Anderson team."

Almost nothing went right for the Railsplitters, who trailed outright for the final 36 minutes after jumping ahead 6-0.

Lincoln Memorial shot 38 percent overall, including a dismal 22 percent effort from three-point range. In the second half, the Railsplitters shot just 33 percent and went 1-for-13 from three-point range. Lincoln Memorial also turned the ball over 18 times and handed out only 10 assists.

Meanwhile, Queens shot 51 percent for the game, including a sizzling 12-for-20 mark from three. The Royals hit 56 percent of their shots in the second half and went 7-for-9 from three over that same span. Queens also outrebounded the Railsplitters 38-27 and led by as many as 33.

Kamaran Calhoun led the Railsplitters with 17 points – two shy of matching his career-high mark – on 6-of-8 shooting, while Anthony Brown and Cornelius Taylor added 10 points apiece. Taylor finished 4-for-13 from the field, 1-of-7 from three and turned it over five times, but added four rebounds, four steals and three assists. Julius Brown and Courvoisier McCauley were the only other LMU players with over three points with 8 and 7, respectively.

Carr went 5-for-7 from three-point territory to score his game-high 22 points for the Royals, while Shaun Willett and Lewis Diankulu dominated the interior with big double-doubles. Willett notched 14 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and two blocks while Diankulu collected 11 points and 10 rebounds. Queens' other two starters – Kenny Dye and Van Turner – hit double figures as well with 11 points apiece.

An early 15-0 run gave the Royals a comfortable lead, while a closing 10-0 run sent Queens into the break with a double-digit advantage. The Royals then blew the game open early in the second half with a 9-0 scoring run.

The Railsplitters raced out to a 6-0 lead as Queens started 0-for-5 from the field and had to burn its second timeout of the first half with 17:28 left on the clock.

However, the Royals rocketed out of the timeout and really never looked back, hitting their next three shots to spark that 15-0 run. A deep three from Turner gave Queens its first lead at the 16:10 mark, while three-pointers from Carr and Josh Brodowicz also highlighted the flurry that put the Royals ahead 15-6 with 14 minutes left.

A pair of three-pointers from Julius Brown stabilized the Railsplitters offensively and helped trim the deficit down to 18-15 at the 10:16 mark, but an old-fashioned three-point play by Diankulu closed out a 9-2 run that pushed Queens ahead 27-17.

Lincoln Memorial again fought its way back into striking distance as McCauley connected on a pair of three-pointers to close the deficit back to single digits. Queens maintained a two-possession lead for the majority of the next passage of play until two free throws and a bucket from Calhoun made it a 35-34 game with 2:41 to play in the half.

However, the Railsplitters wouldn't score again for the rest of the half, while Carr knocked down back-to-back tough three-pointers near the end of the shot clock to fuel a 10-0 spurt that sent Queens into the half with a commanding 45-34 lead.

Taylor hit a jumper on LMU's first second-half possession while McCauley followed with a free throw to cut the deficit down to eight, but two freebies and a three by Carr sparked a 9-0 run that pushed the Royals in front 54-37 with just over three minutes expired in the half.

Lincoln Memorial never trailed by less than 14 after that, while Willett buried a three-pointer to put the Royals in front 60-40 at the 15-minute mark.

After a Cameron Henry bucket cut the deficit to 62-47, the Royals scored 10 unanswered points again to stretch their lead to 25 with just under nine minutes left.

A three-pointer from Dye with two minutes left extended the Queens lead to 89-56, but TJ Harvin made a three-pointer with 12 seconds left to help Lincoln Memorial avoid its first 30-point loss since 2004.
