HARROGATE, Tenn. – The LMU men's tennis team's hard-fought match against Cumberland University came down to a marathon match at no. 1 singles, but in the end LMU fell 5-4 to the Phoenix Saturday morning in the Indoor Tennis Facility

The Railsplitters took only one of the three doubles points, but the two losses were close. Josh Peress and Jake Tuchmann won at #2 8-6 over Ramon Puertolas/Riccardo Ferraris on court two. On court one, Constantin Ernstberger and Moritz Hoerner fell to Pau Grabuleda/Francisco Fernandez 8-6 while on court three Xavier Marti and Iker Tomas Moure fell to Thiago Lopes/Axel Lucich 9-7.

In singles, LMU picked up wins at nos. 2, 3, and 6 while the Phoenix won at no. 4 and no. 5 to tie the match at 4-4. Peress defeated Grabuleda on court two 7-6 (7-0), 6-0. Ernstberger won over Fernandez 6-1, 6-1 on court three while Tuchmann defeated Ferraris 6-2, 6-4 on court five.

With the match tied, all eyes were on no. 1 singles on court one, where Marti and Puertolas, who is ranked #30 in the NAIA, were finishing up one of the longer and higher scoring matches in recent history. Puertolas took the first set 6-4, while Marti evened things up with a 6-2 win in the second set. It all came down to the third tie-breaking set, which Puertolas pulled out 15-13, giving CU the win and LMU their first loss of the season.

LMU (3-1) will host Union College Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in the Indoor Tennis Facility. Union (1-1) played Cumberland Friday evening in LMU's indoor facility, with Cumberland winning 5-4.
