Railsplitters extend winning streak to seven with doubleheader sweep over Lake Erie

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lincoln Memorial University baseball team (8-2) extended its winning streak to seven games with a doubleheader sweep of the Lake Erie Storm (0-2) Saturday at the new Lamar Hennon Field. The Railsplitters won game one 11-2 and the seven-inning back end 3-1.

Logan Augustine reached base seven times in eight plate appearances with a combined 3-for-4 performance with four walks and four stolen bases. Grady Wright had a pair of hits in each game and reached base six times in seven trips with a pair of walks, doubles and RBI.

Monday's series finale will take place at 2 p.m. back at Lamar Hennon Field.

Game One: Lincoln Memorial 11, Lake Erie 2

Lake Erie scored the first two runs of the game in the fifth, but the Railsplitters responded with 11 unanswered to turn a game that started as a pitchers' duel into a blowout.

Augustine reached base in all five trips to the plate (1-for-1, 4 BB), stole three bases and scored twice to lead a Railsplitter offense that reached a double-digit run total for the fourth straight home game and fifth time in six games overall. Joe Stucky went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, three runs scored and an RBI. Grady Wright reached base four times (2-for-3, 2 BB) and drove in a pair of runs. Nate Stinson (3-for-5, 2 runs), Dalton Dedas (2-for-3), Marco Rios and Mason Ewers also each drove in a pair of runs.

Lincoln Memorial outhit Lake Erie 12-7 and walked nine times. The Railsplitters hit .471 (8-for-17) with runners in scoring position while the Storm went 0-for-10.

Ethan Elliott had his shortest outing of the season and allowed two earned runs on four hits and a walk in 4.2 innings. His five strikeouts were also a season low. The lefty held Lake Erie scoreless through four innings before allowing two runs in the fifth and departing. Jake Grenus came on in relief and threw one pitch to get out of the inning. The righty picked up his first win as a Railsplitter with 3.1 scoreless innings.

Lake Erie starter David Lemasters matched Elliott's scoreless effort through four innings before also allowing two runs in the fifth and departing. He posted a similar stat line with two earned runs and four hits allowed in 4.2 innings in a no-decision. The righty walked two and struck out four. Three Lake Erie relievers each allowed three earned runs apiece over the final 3.1 innings on eight hits and seven walks to allow LMU to break the tie and pull ahead. Mitch Sorensen was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs in the sixth.

The Storm broke through first with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth off Elliott. Nathan Erzen tripled in the first run and scored on a Corbin Paxton groundout to second.

Dedas singled in LMU's first run in the bottom of the fifth, and Rios hit into a fielder's choice to third that allowed Wright to score the tying run. LMU took the lead in the sixth on a Stinson single and expanded on it with back-to-back sacrifice flies from Dedas and Rios.

Ewers was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in the first of three runs in the seventh. Wright followed with a two-run single to left two batters later to score the other two. Stucky drove in a run in the eighth on a double down the right field line, and Ewers and Stinson followed with RBI singles to center.

Waller (2-for-3) was the only Lake Erie player to record multiple hits.

Game Two: Lincoln Memorial 3, Lake Erie 1

Seth Hunt reached base in all three plate appearances (1-for-1, 2 BB) and scored and drove in a run. Augustine (2-for-3) drove in the team's other run. Wright went 2-for-2 with a double—the only extra-base hit of the game for either team.

Hits were even at six apiece. Trace Peterson (2-for-3) was the only Lake Erie player with more than one hit and drove in the team's lone run.

LMU broke through first in the bottom of the first on a passed ball following a Hunt walk and Augustine single. The passed ball allowed Hunt to advance to third, and Augustine got caught in a rundown that allowed him to score.

The 1-0 score held until the top of the fourth when Peterson hit an RBI single through the left side to tie the game. The hit allowed a runner to advance to third, but any threat was ended when Peterson was thrown out trying to advance to second.

That earned run stood as Joe Bobiak's only blemish through 4.1 innings. The lefty departed with a no-decision. Dominic Morabito closed out the game with 2.2 scoreless innings and struck out six to pick up the win.

LMU scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Hunt singled in pinch runner Triston Campbell to take the lead. Augustine then singled in pinch runner Justin Shaw to add some insurance.

Lake Erie starter Michael Stryffeler was tagged with the loss with three earned runs allowed in 4.2 innings.
