BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Lincoln Memorial University baseball team (10-2) extended its winning streak to nine and snapped King's seven-game win streak in the process with a 13-3 victory over the Tornado (7-3) Tuesday afternoon.
Logan Augustine remained on fire by going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a pair of walks and RBI.
Timmy Wages finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored.
Muta Crusoe also had two hits and reached another time on a walk.
Hits were tied at 10, but Railsplitter batters drew seven walks compared to two for King. Five of those hits came with runners in scoring position (5-for-14) while the Tornado only went 2-for-7.
The game opened as a pitcher's duel with
Jack Gomersall and Ashton King tossing four shutout innings. However, neither factored into the decision. King was removed after four innings although he allowed just two singles and walks and struck out seven. Gomersall, making his first start for LMU, went 4.2 innings and allowed one run on five hits and a walk. The freshman struck out one.
With King off the mound, the Railsplitters were able to torch eight Tornado relievers for 13 runs. LMU's first four came on three hits in the top of the fifth off two King relievers. Augustine kicked off the scoring with a bases-loaded walk. Wages singled in two more runs, and Crusoe laced another single to plate the final one of the inning.
After King scored its first run in the bottom half of the inning on a J.P. Castaneda double, Lincoln Memorial only needed two hits to add seven more runs in the sixth. Both hits—back-to-back singles by
Tyler Adams and Wages—each brought in a run. The other runs scored on two wild pitches, a throwing error, balk and hit-by-pitch.
Augustine doubled in another run in the seventh and later scored on another wild pitch.
King scored the game's final two runs by plating one apiece in the seventh and ninth.
