SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Lady Railsplitters combined for 13 runs to sweep their first doubleheader of the season on the final day of the Mid-South Classic on Sunday morning.
Lincoln Memorial (7-7) drew its record back even on the season with a 5-1 win over Mount Olive in game one and an 8-0 five-inning pummeling of the winless Converse Valkyries in game two. The Lady Railsplitters piled up 17 hits in the doubleheader sweep, including six extra-base knocks.
Lincoln Memorial will return to action on Saturday, March 3 when the Lady Railsplitters pay the Virginia-Wise Cavaliers a visit for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
Game One: Lincoln Memorial 5, Mount Olive 1
Teddi Collins went 2-for-2 with two RBI, while
Allie Jones and
Audrey Petoskey added two hits, an RBI and a run scored apiece to lead the Lady Railsplitters' offensive attack. Lincoln Memorial produced eight hits as a team and didn't record a strikeout for the first time all season.
Brianna Taylor dazzled again in the circle, giving up just six singles and one earned run over seven innings of work. The Ooltewah, Tenn. native did not issue a walk and struck out two to move to 3-4 on the season.
The Lady Railsplitters got things going offensively right from the jump, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first.
Ty-Kella Goins led off with a double and
Jacie Pittman was hit by a pitch to put runners on for Jones, who doubled in Goins, and Webb, who drove in Pittman with an RBI groundout.
Lincoln Memorial then pushed its lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the third frame. After a walk was issued to Jones and
Kelsie Hocutt singled, Petoskey drove in a run with a single. Collins drove in two more in the very next at-bat with a single that was capped by a throwing error in right field.
Mount Olive scored its lone run of the game in the top of the sixth, as Callie Ferrell led off with a single, advanced to second on a fielding error, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Kayla Allen.
Heather Childress led the Mount Olive attack with a pair of hits. Megan Mills was pegged with the loss after surrendering three hits and two runs over 2.0 innings of work. Taylor Waddell didn't fare much better in relief, giving up five hits and two earned runs over four frames.
Taylor retired the first seven batters she faced until a bunt single from Kristin Power in the top of the third broke up her humble no-hit bid.
Game Two: Lincoln Memorial 8, Converse 0 (5 innings)
Seven different players registered at least one hit for the Lady Railsplitters, who extended the Valkyries' woeful start to the 2018 campaign with a five-inning run rule victory.
Petoskey hit her team-leading fourth home run of the season, scored twice and drew a walk, while Goins doubled as part of a 2-for-3 afternoon. Webb went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while
Bella Buccellato drove in two, including one on a double that clinched the five-inning win.
Grace Cochran, Pittman and Hocutt also had RBIs in the contest.
Justice Smith bounced back from a hard-luck loss on Saturday against Limestone by holding the punch-less Converse offense to just four singles in the complete-game shutout. Smith walked two and struck out two to move to 4-3 on the season.
The Lady Railsplitters put the Valkyries away right from the start, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. Goins doubled and later scored on Pittman's single. A fielder's choice pushed the second run across before Petoskey belted her two-run home run to cap the scoring.
Lincoln Memorial added two more runs in the fourth as Petoskey walked and scored on a costly throwing error by the catcher. That miscue also put Cochran on third base, and she scored on a sacrifice bunt by Buccellato.
The Lady Railsplitters then invoked the run rule in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Cochran and Buccellato's RBI double.
No player had more than one hit for the Valkyries but Jena Massing had a hit and a walk to reach base in two of her three plate appearances. Massing was also saddled with the loss in the circle after allowing four hits and four runs in the first inning. She only recorded two outs before being replaced by Jianna Pellegrino, who gave up five hits and four runs (one earned) over the final four frames.
