AIKEN, S.C. – Timmy Wages homered,
Tyler Adams went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored and
Joe Bobiak held USC Aiken to two runs over 6.1 innings as the Railsplitters (1-1) picked up their first win of the year with a 6-3 victory over the Pacers (1-1) Saturday afternoon at Roberto Hernandez Field.
LMU left 11 runners on base for the second straight game but tallied 11 hits—four of which went for extra bases—after totaling just three singles in Friday's series opener. Adams reached base four times with the three hits and a walk.
Mason Ewers was the only other Railsplitter to record multiple hits with a 2-for-4 performance that included a two-RBI double.
Bobiak's only blemish on the mound in his LMU debut was a two-run home run in the third inning by Daulton Weeks. The lefty transfer from Cumberland County Community College struck out eight in his 6.1 innings of work and held the Pacers to just four hits to earn the win.
Jake Grenus, also making his LMU debut, pitched the final 2.2 innings to pick up his first save. The College of Central Florida transfer allowed one run on a Conner Durden solo home run and struck out four.
USC Aiken's offense was held in check for the second straight day and totaled just six hits. Joey Smithers and Chandler Rogers each went 2-for-4 while the rest of the team combined to hit 2-for-25 with the pair of homers. All three of the team's runs were scored via home run.
Christian Aragon made the start on the mound for USC Aiken and held the Railsplitters to one run and six hits over 3.1 innings but was pulled after 60 pitches. Mitch Spence came on in relief and allowed three runs over 3.2 innings to take the loss, though the righty did strike out nine. Two more Pacer relievers combined to allow two additional runs—one earned—over the final two innings.
Weeks' two-run homer in the bottom of the third opened the scoring, though the Railsplitters got a run back in the top of the fourth on a
Muta Crusoe single following Adams' first double. LMU added three more runs in the top of the fifth on Wages' solo homer and Ewers' two-run double.
The 4-2 lead held until the ninth when Adams doubled in another run and later scored on a wild pitch. Durden led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo homer, but the Pacers failed to score again.
Sunday's rubber match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. back at Roberto Hernandez Field.
