Railsplitters roll over Emmanuel in straight sets to move to 4-1 at Mars Gym

HARROGATE, Tenn. – Lincoln Memorial University's men's volleyball team snapped a three-game skid and dispatched Emmanuel (2-7) in straight sets Wednesday night at Mary Mars Gymnasium. The Railsplitters (4-5) never fell behind by more than two points and didn't trail at all in two of the three sets as the team cruised to set wins of 25-18, 26-24 and 25-19.
 
Despite never winning a set, Emmanuel totaled more kills with 35 compared to LMU's 33. However, the Lions committed nine more attacking errors (22-13) and hit .153 while the Railsplitters hit .282.
 
The game was also decided in the serving department, as the Railsplitters had a 9-4 edge in service aces. Emmanuel committed 10 service errors to LMU's six.
 
Evan Cory led all players with 12 kills. The sophomore also added three service aces, six digs, two assists and a block. Joshua Riblett was next on LMU with six kills and also recorded three service aces. Pedro Carvalho totaled five kills, a .667 attack percentage and four total blocks. Jordan Walley tied a season high with seven digs and notched two service aces. AJ Risavy racked up 26 assists.
 
Don Thompson led the Emmanuel attack with 11 kills and a .529 attack percentage. Alejandro Robles added 10 kills and hit .333. The rest of the team hit just -.064 with 14 kills and 17 errors. Caleb Bonaventure totaled 31 assists, and Manuel Melenciano pitched in six digs.
 
Lincoln Memorial never trailed in the first set and led by as many as 11 points. A late 6-0 Emmanuel run cut the score to 22-18, but the Railsplitters took the final three points to finish off the set. The Lions led in kills 8-7 but hit -.040. Cory, Carvalho and Marcus Molina totaled two kills apiece for LMU.
 
Set two was the most competitive with 15 ties and eight lead changes. Emmanuel never led by more than two, and LMU by more than three. The Lions again led in kills 15-13 and out-hit the Railsplitters .242-.156 but were undone by in the serving game as the Railsplitters had a 4-0 edge in service aces. Cory totaled six kills.
 
LMU took control of the third set immediately by scoring the first four points and led by as much as nine at 18-9. Emmanuel tried to make it interesting late by going on an 8-2 run to cut the LMU lead to 20-17, but a 3-0 Railsplitter run that included two Cory kills ended any momentum the Lions had built. Lincoln Memorial enjoyed its most efficient set with 13 kills and a .600 hitting percentage. Cory and Riblett notched four kills apiece.
 
The Railsplitters return to action at Mary Mars Gymnasium Friday at 7 p.m. against Coker with a chance to even their record back to .500.
