HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lincoln Memorial University baseball team swept Saturday's doubleheader at Lamar Hennon Field with Tusculum (11-10, 5-4 SAC) to claim the series after dropping Friday's opener. The Railsplitters (15-7, 4-5 SAC) won the nine-inning game 4-0 behind
Joe Bobiak's one-hit, complete game shutout and an eight-run third inning won the nightcap 15-7.
Chris Salvey made his first starts of the season at first base and went a combined 3-for-6 with a home run, double and five RBI.
The Railsplitters conclude their 10-game homestand with a nonconference doubleheader Wednesday against Bellarmine.
Game One: Lincoln Memorial 4, Tusculum 0
Bobiak's gem powered the Railsplitters to their first shutout of the season. Zack Finchum led off the game with a single, but the Pioneers were held hitless the rest of the way. Bobiak improved to 5-0 and struck out six en route to his first complete game as a Railsplitter.
The lefty transfer from Cumberland County Community College retired 17 straight after the hit before a two-out throwing error on
Joe Stucky in the sixth allowed Finchum to reach again. That turned into the only inning Tusculum threatened as Bobiak then walked and hit a batter to load the bases but worked out of the jam unscathed. A one-out walk in the ninth was his only other blemish, but the next batter grounded into a double play to end the game.
Bobiak was staked to an early lead after
Nate Stinson's bases-loaded single in the bottom of the first drove in two runs. The Railsplitters' other two runs came on back-to-back solo shots by Salvey and
Henry Moore in the bottom of the fourth.
Moore was the only player to finish the game with two hits with a 2-for-3 afternoon.
Tyler Adams went 1-for-3 and also reached base twice courtesy of a walk.
Seth Hunt and Stucky led off the bottom of the first with singles and came around to score as part of 1-for-4 afternoons.
LMU outhit the Pioneers 8-1 for the game.
Zach Sanders took the loss and fell to 2-2 with four earned runs, six hits and a walk allowed in five innings. Colin Johnston held the Railsplitters scoreless over the final three innings.
Game Two: Lincoln Memorial 15, Tusculum 7
All nine LMU starters recorded at least one hit as the Railsplitters tallied 15 total.
Will Reddick (3-for-3) reached base four times and was a home run short of the cycle. Four other LMU players had two hits:
Logan Augustine (2-for-4, 2 R, 3 RBI, HR), Adams (2-for-4, 2B, HR), Salvey (2-for-3, 2B, 4 RBI) and Stinson (2-for-3, 2 R). Hunt (1-for-4) also drove in a pair of runs. LMU hit .579 (11-for-19) with runners on base and .563 (9-for-16) with runners in scoring position.
The Railsplitters again took the lead in the bottom of the first. Reddick kicked off the scoring with a bases-loaded single to drive in two runs. A third run scored on a wild pitch.
That lead was short-lived as the Pioneers plated six runs on six hits in the top of the second. Edison Cabrera doubled in the first run. LMU starting pitcher
Dominic Morabito had a chance to get out of the inning with just the one run allowed, but a Daulton Martin two-run single followed by Colby Skeen and Nate Montgomery RBI singles ended the righty's day.
Matt Mullenbach came on in relief and allowed another RBI single to Jarel McDade before finally getting out of the inning.
Tusculum had 10 hits led by Martin (3-for-4, 2 RBI, 3B), McDade (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, HR) and Cabrera (2-for-3, RBI). The Pioneers batted .375 (6-for-16) with runners on base and .667 (6-for-9) with runners in scoring position though those six hits all came in the second inning.
Morabito lasted just 1.2 innings and allowed a season-high six runs on six hits, two walks and a hit batter. Mullenbach settled in and allowed just one earned run, McDade's solo homer, over 5.1 innings. The righty picked up the win and struck out seven.
The Railsplitters stormed back with an eight-run third inning to retake the lead for good. Adams kickstarted the rally with a one-out solo shot. The next five batters also reached as three more runs crossed. Stinson's infield hit plated the next run followed by a Salvey two-run double. Stucky later singled in another run, and Augustine capped the scoring with a three-run blast. Tusculum used four pitchers in the inning.
Salvey expanded the LMU lead to 12-6 with a sacrifice fly the following inning.
McDade led off the fifth with a solo homer to left.
LMU's final three runs came across in the sixth. Salvey drove in another run on a single, and Hunt drove in a pair with another single two batters later.
Mullenbach struck out the side in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.
