CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The LMU men's tennis team and Queens went at it for over four hours Saturday afternoon, but in the end the host Royals pulled out the 5-4 win.
LMU (6-4, 2-1 South Atlantic Conference) picked up wins at no. 2 doubles and at the no. 2, 3 and 5 flights in singles, but a hard-fought match at the no. 1 flight ended up determining the overall match winner.
David Segarra and
Joshua Peress picked up LMU's win in doubles as they defeated Kasper Rolfsen and Andor Vas 8-6 at the no. 2 flight.
With Queens leading 2-1, the Royals then picked up wins at no. 6 and no. 4 to take a 4-1 lead. The matches at the no. 2 and 5 flights both went long, with Segarra eventually defeating Vas with a tiebreaker in the second set 6-4, 7-6 (10-6) and
Iker Tomas Moure besting Rolfsen at no. 5 in a tiebreaker set 6-2, 2-6, 11-9.
However, Queens won the no. 1 flight in the meantime as
Joshua Peress fell 6-3, 6-1 and put Queens ahead 6-1. LMU's
Constantin Ernstberger also picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at the no. 3 flight, but the Royals escaped with the 5-4 match win.
LMU returns home to host Tusculum Wednesday afternoon.
