HARROGATE, Tenn. – It came down to the match at the no. 6 flight, but in the end 42nd-ranked Tusculum pulled out the 5-4 South Atlantic Conference win over the LMU men's tennis team in the Indoor Tennis Facility Wednesday afternoon.
With the loss, LMU falls to 6-5 overall and 2-2 in SAC play. Tusculum improves to 11-4 overall and 2-2 in the SAC with the win.
LMU won two of the three doubles flights to take the 2-1 lead into singles play.
David Segarra and
Joshua Peress cruised to the easy 6-2 win on court two while
Xavier Marti and
Constantin Ernstberger moved to 3-0 in SAC play with their 8-6 win on court three.
In singles, Peress improved to 11-4 overall on the season and 3-1 in SAC play as he won a hard fought 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 match on court two vs. TC's Marco Meon. On court one, Ernstberger then made the match 4-1 in favor of LMU with his 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 win over Yago Fernandez.
The Pioneers then won at no. 4, no. 5 and no. 2 flights to tie the match up at 4-4. It all came down to the no. 6 flight match on court three between LMU's
Iker Tomas Moure and TC's Gabriel Yaguar. Yaguar took the first set 6-2, only to see Moure roar back and claim the second set 6-3. In the third set, Yaguar grabbed the early lead and held on for the 6-3 win, giving the Pioneers the 5-4 match victory.
LMU will host Coker on Saturday at 10 a.m. With a 90 percent chance of showers in the forecast, the match will likely be played in the Indoor Tennis Facility.
