Railsplitters smash Shorter 21-5 to notch best start in program history

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The Railsplitters matched their season-high scoring mark, opened on a commanding 10-0 run and scored at least 20 goals for just the fourth time in program history to pummel Shorter 21-5 on Friday night at the University of the Cumberlands' James H. Taylor, II Stadium. Lincoln Memorial (5-1) extended its winning streak to three and marched to the best start in program history, while the Hawks (1-5) remained winless all-time against South Atlantic Conference opposition.

The Railsplitters took control of the match before the first half ended, using a 10-0 start that saw eight different players score to bury the Hawks in an insurmountable hole. Shorter finally halted that run with its first goal of the match with 2:26 remaining in the half, but Lincoln Memorial promptly reeled off a 10-1 flurry that bled into the fourth quarter and made it 20-1. The Hawks scored three of their five goals in the final 9:47 to cut the final deficit to 16.

It marked the second 20-goal outburst of the season for the Railsplitters this season and their fourth in program history. Lincoln Memorial tallied 21 in the second match of the season against Palm Beach Atlantic as well. The Railsplitters fell two shy of the program record set last season against Tennessee Wesleyan.

It was a record-setting performance all around for the Railsplitters, who broke the program record for shot attempts, ground balls and caused turnovers. Lincoln Memorial outshot the Hawks 60-25 to break the previous record of 56 that it set in the season opener against Hampton. The 61 ground balls shattered the previous record of 48 set in 2016. The 20 caused turnovers broke the old record by one.

Nine players tallied multiple points for the Railsplitters, led by Adam Golia's four goals and three assists. Chris Tucker pitched in three goals and one assist, while Robert Tucker, Kyle Arcuri and Billy Kopsky each had two goals and an assist. Dylan Neisler and Reggie Golfin contributed two goals apiece, while Nick Borriello had two assists. Anthony Teresky chipped in a goal and an assist.

Logan Miller and Jordan Coates accounted for four of Shorter's five goals with two apiece.

Three different goalies made an appearance for the Railsplitters. Michael Kessler picked up the win after making three saves with a single goal allowed over 30 minutes of work. Jeffrey Handman played just over 23 minutes, racking up nine saves with three goals allowed over that span. Cal Whyte also made an appearance with 6:35 minutes of time and a goal allowed.

Richard Ticer was saddled with the loss for Shorter after allowing all 21 goals through in 60 minutes of work. He also made 22 saves in defeat.

With the victory, the Railsplitters move to 5-1 for the first time in their four seasons of existence. The 2017 team was the only other team in program history to start 4-1.
