Railsplitters rally for 8-7 win over Erskine

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lincoln Memorial University baseball team (18-9) scored six unanswered runs to overcome a 7-2 deficit and beat Erskine (19-8) 8-7 Tuesday afternoon at Lamar Hennon Field.

Hits were tied at 10 apiece. Chris Salvey finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles while Will Reddick and Mason Ewers had two singles apiece. Ewers and Seth Hunt each drove in two runs, and Timmy Wages scored twice.

Austin Mapes led Erskine offensively by going 3-for-5 with three RBI. Billy Ryan hit a two-run home run while Trevor Wood had a solo shot.

Ryan's two-run blast gave the Flying Fleet a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first off LMU starting pitcher Ben Wiley.

Ewers' infield hit plated Lincoln Memorial's first run in the bottom of the second.

Wood homered to lead off a four-run top of the fourth for Erskine. Thomas Lavin hit a sacrifice fly to left to plate the next run, and Mapes capped the scoring with a two-run double that put the Flying Fleet up 6-1.

Wiley lasted 3.2 innings and allowed five runs—all earned—on six hits and a walk. The righty also hit a batter and struck out three.

The Railsplitters got a run back in the bottom half of the inning when a passed ball allowed Salvey to score, but Mapes' RBI single in the top of the sixth put Erskine up 7-2.

A pair of Erskine errors in the bottom half of the sixth led to a three-run inning for the Railsplitters. After LMU loaded the bases with one out, Ewers fouled out deep enough to drive in a run. A dropped fly ball by the center fielder one batter later allowed another run to score. A two-out fielding error by the third baseman with a runner on third made the score 7-5.

The Railsplitters took the lead two innings later with a three-run eighth. A Marco Rios double with two outs cut the score to 7-6, and Hunt followed with a two-run single to give LMU the lead.

Matt Mullenbach pitched perfect eighth and ninth innings to pick up the win and improve to 3-1.

The Railsplitters continue their 11-game homestand over the weekend with a pivotal South Atlantic Conference series against Carson-Newman. The three-game set will kick off Friday at 4 p.m. and will resume with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
