Railsplitters rout Bears 12-2 in series opener

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lincoln Memorial University baseball team opened its three-game South Atlantic Conference series against Lenoir-Rhyne (21-13, 9-7 SAC) with a 12-2 win Friday evening at Lamar Hennon Field. The Railsplitters (22-10, 8-8 SAC) scored in all but two innings and outhit the Bears 18-6.

All nine LMU starters recorded at least one hit. Nate Stinson (3-for-3) reached base safely in all five plate appearances with a pair of doubles and walks. The sophomore also scored three times. Joe Stucky finished 2-for-4 with a career-high four RBI. Tyler Adams and Dalton Dedas each homered and drove in two runs apiece.

Ethan Elliott earned his third straight win with just one unearned allowed in eight innings. The junior lefty added eight strikeouts to his SAC-leading total while allowing five hits and a walk. He improved his record to 5-2 and lowered his ERA to 2.02.

Justin Dean doubled twice and recorded three of Lenoir-Rhyne's six hits with a 3-for-4 outing.

The Bears struck first in the top of the first. Marcus Shoemaker reached on an infield single. He later advanced two bases on a Timmy Wages throwing error and scored on Aaron Stamper's single to center. The team's only other run scored on a balk in the ninth.

Chris Salvey tied the score in the bottom of the first by driving in Will Reddick on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded.

LMU added three more runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Dedas' two-run blast to left in the second inning put LMU up 3-1. Adams grounded into a double play, and Stucky laced an RBI single to right to plate the two third-inning runs. Adams and Stinson drove in runs in the fourth with a single and double, respectively.

Hunter Martin fell to 1-4 with five earned runs allowed on nine hits and three walks in 2.2 innings. Three relievers combined to allow seven more runs over the final 5.1 innings. The four pitchers issued nine total free passes to LMU hitters and uncorked a pair of wild pitches.

Stucky increased the lead to 10-1 with a bases-clearing triple in the sixth. Adams later homered to lead off the eighth. Muta Crusoe doubled in the team's 12th run later in the inning.

Lincoln Memorial has now won 11 of the last 13 matchups against Lenoir-Rhyne dating back to 2014.

The two teams will conclude their series Saturday back at Lamar Hennon Field with a nine-inning game at 1 p.m. followed by a seven-inning nightcap.
