PHILIPPI, W.V. – The Lincoln Memorial University men's volleyball team topped Alderson Broaddus (3-16) in straight sets for the second time this season Friday night. The Railsplitters set a new program high with their 11
th victory of the season and cruised to set scores of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-13.
LMU's .409 hitting percentage set a new season high for a road match. Kills were even at 33 apiece, but the Battlers committed 23 attack errors and hit just .120. Meanwhile, the Railsplitters only committed six attack errors. LMU held the advantages in service aces (6-2), blocks (8-3) and digs (23-21).
Evan Cory set a program record for kills in a three-set match with 16 and only recorded one error. His .625 attack percentage also set a new program record with a minimum of 20 attempts.
Jordan Walley notched three service aces for the second straight game.
Joshua Riblett added five kills.
Pedro Carvalho led all players with six blocks.
Logan Kerley recorded eight digs while
AJ Risavy dished out 29 assists.
Jose Ramirez led the Battlers with 12 kills and a .292 hitting percentage. Francisco Cabrera pitched in eight kills.
Lincoln Memorial took an early 5-1 lead in the opening set and later used a 4-0 spurt to go up 12-5. The Battlers never got closer than five points the rest of the way as LMU took the set 25-19. Cory tallied six kills. The Railsplitters enjoyed their most efficient set with a .435 mark.
The Railsplitters closed the second set on an 11-3 run to win 25-20 after falling behind 17-14. A 6-0 spurt that included five straight Alderson Broaddus attack errors gave LMU the lead for good. The Battlers led 15-13 in kills but recorded nine attack errors and hit .188. Cory notched eight kills while Ramirez had seven.
LMU never trailed in the final set and won 25-13 to clinch the match. A 13-4 run turned a two-point lead at 8-6 into a 21-10 advantage. The Railsplitters also took four of the final five points. Lincoln Memorial's eight kills and .389 hitting percentage were its lowest totals of any set, but the team also only committed one attack error. Meanwhile, Alderson Broaddus again committed nine attack errors compared to seven kills for a -.077 clip.
The Railsplitters return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. at Charleston.
