HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Railsplitters equaled the stingiest defensive effort in program history and
Adam Golia became the first LMU men's lacrosse player to reach 200 career points in a 14-2 beatdown of Newberry on Saturday at the LMU Lacrosse Complex.
Lincoln Memorial (12-3, 6-2 SAC) entered the third quarter nursing a narrow 4-1 lead but started the second half with a massive 8-0 run to blow the match wide open and cruise to the finish line. The Wolves (4-10, 0-7 SAC) scored their one and only goal of the second half with 3:07 left in the fourth quarter, as Lincoln Memorial tied the lowest goal output allowed in program history by matching its effort from a 17-2 win over Asbury in the 2015 season finale.
With the victory, the Railsplitters clinched at worst the No. 3 seed for the SAC Championship and will host their opening-round match of the conference tournament on Tuesday, April 24.
Golia – one of 18 seniors that were honored prior to the match – had another memorable afternoon, scoring three goals while dishing out four assists to surpass the 200-career point mark. Golia pushed his SAC-leading season total to 87 and now has 206 points in his illustrious career.
Kyle Arcuri added two goals and one assist,
Billy Kopsky chipped in one goal and two assists and
Chris Tucker had three goals. Seven other players produced at least one point for the Railsplitters, including one-goal, one-assist outputs from
Anthony Teresky and
Jared Courchene.
Lincoln Memorial dominated every phase of the match.
The Railsplitters broke the program record for shot attempts with 62 compared to only 21 for the Wolves. LMU outshout Newberry 30-10 in the second half alone, while Golia (14) and
Robert Tucker (10) combined to outshoot the Wolves' entire team.
Lincoln Memorial also finished with a 33-11 edge in shots on goal and a 49-24 advantage on ground ball recoveries. The Railsplitters went 15-for-20 on face-off attempts and blanked Newberry on their five man-up opportunities.
Stone Boone and Belton Bryan accounted for Newberry's only goals in the match.
Despite firing off 32 shots and landing 14 shots on goal in the first half, the Railsplitters were only able to put four into the back of the net. Golia scored twice to give Lincoln Memorial an early 2-0 lead before Boone cut the lead in half with a goal at the 1:11 mark of the first quarter.
Lincoln Memorial blanked the Wolves in the second quarter, and
Chris Tucker and
Robert Tucker scored in the quarter to send the Railsplitters into the break with a 4-1 cushion.
It didn't take the Railsplitters long to completely break the game open in the third quarter, though, as Teresky, Arcuri and Kopsky scored in the first five minutes to extend the lead to 7-1. After a brief lull, Golia, Courchene and Arcuri tallied to complete a dominant 6-0 third quarter.
Dylan Neisler then scored less than two minutes into the fourth quarter and
Khanan Bodley got on the board less than a minute later to extend the Railsplitters' lead to 12-1.
Newberry broke its long scoring drought with Bryan's man-down goal late in the fourth quarter, but
Chris Tucker scored twice in the final 1:40 to put the finishing touches on the Railsplitters' 14-2 triumph.
Prior to the match, Lincoln Memorial celebrated the legacy of the first freshman class in program history with its Senior Day ceremony. The 18 seniors that were honored were a part of the program's first recruiting class in the lead up to the inaugural 2015 campaign. That group has seen the Railsplitters go from 4-10 in their debut season, to 6-6 in its second year, to 8-7 in its third and now 12-3 in year four.
The Railsplitters will close out the regular season on Saturday, April 21 with a nonconference matchup against Davis & Elkins at Knoxville Catholic High School
