HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lady Railsplitter tennis team won sent their seniors out in style as they routed Lenoir-Rhyne 8-1 in the regular season finale Saturday afternoon at the LMU Tennis Complex.
It was the final home match for
Angelica Solano,
Javiera Gonzalez and
Julia Zellner.
LMU improves to 13-6 overall and 6-4 in South Atlantic Conference play while the Bears fall to 11-9 and 3-7.
The lone loss for LMU came at the no. 3 singles flight.
LMU swept the doubles, with
Angelica Solano and
Marta Pinol winning 8-7 at no. 1 over Sanne Janssen and Emily Murchland while at no. 2,
Julia Loos and
Johanna Delisse cruised to the 8-2 win over Taylor Fredrickson and Marta Escanero Funes.
Julia Valls and
Kristin Vogel had a relatively easy 8-3 win over Iulia Ponomareva and Sara Kalkenova at no. 3.
In singles, Vogel picked up at 7-5, 6-4 win over Ponomareva at no. 1, while Pinol needed three sets to surpass Kalkenova at no. 2 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
At no. 3 Escanero picked up the 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) win over LMU's Loos and at no. 4 Valls won over Murchland 7-6, 6-4.
With LMU reaching the five point mark and taking the match, the remaining flights were played as pro sets, with Zellner defeating Janssen 8-1 at no. 5 and Solano winning over Fredrickson 8-0.
The Lady Railsplitters will be on the road to open next week's SAC Tournament as they will play at Newberry on Tuesday in the quarterfinal round. The winner advances to the semifinal round, which will be held at the Cayce Tennis Center in Columbia, South Carolina, next weekend.
