HICKORY, N.C. – No. 3 Lenoir-Rhyne surged in the second half to hand the Railsplitters their second consecutive loss 14-11 on Saturday afternoon at Morentz Stadium.
The Bears (12-1, 5-0 SAC) never trailed but Lincoln Memorial (10-3, 4-2 SAC) didn't make it easy for the nation's third-ranked team, as the match was knotted at 6-6 through the first two quarters. However, the Bears opened the second half with a 6-1 run and held on down the stretch to win its eighth consecutive match while sending the Railsplitters home with their second straight setback.
Robert Tucker scored a match- and season-high four goals to lead the Railsplitters.
Adam Golia was limited to only three shot attempts but managed to put two through for goals, while
Kyle Arcuri,
Billy Kopsky,
Anthony Teresky and
Chris Tucker had a goal and an assist apiece.
Lenoir-Rhyne launched 57 shots in the contest, the highest total by an LMU opponent this season to obliterate Saint Leo's 45 attempts. Freshman
Michael Kessler recorded his second-highest save output of the season with 13 stops but allowed his second-most goals of the season as well with 14.
The Railsplitters finished with 37 shots while Lenoir-Rhyne also accounted for a 29-21 edge in ground ball recoveries and a 19-9 advantage in face-offs won.
Quinn Kuhn led Lenoir-Rhyne with three goals and one assist, Ben Corrigan added three goals, Joe Buduo had two goals and two assists, and Myles Moffat chipped in two goals and an assist. Eric Dickinson handed out two assists.
Ryan Crompton picked up the win after allowing 11 goals and making 11 saves in the contest.
It was a wild back-and-forth opening half that saw the two teams combine for 53 shot attempts, while neither team led by more than two at any point. Lenoir-Rhyne outshot the Railsplitters 33-20 but Kessler made 10 of his 13 saves to prevent the Bears from gaining any substantial momentum.
L-R set the pace at the start as Buduo assisted on a goal by Kuhn at the 11:13 mark and later scored in unassisted fashion at 7:05 to put the Bears ahead 2-0. However, the Railsplitters responded with goals by Teresky and
Dylan Neisler in the final 1:25 of the first quarter to tie the match at 2-2.
The Bears regained the lead on a goal from Collin Lett 34 seconds into the second quarter, but
Chris Tucker went one-on-one and put a goal through at 8:58 to tie it up at 3-3.
Kuhn and Corrigan scored goals 20 seconds apart to quickly put L-R back in front 5-3 midway through the second quarter, but Golia bullied his way in front of the net and scored to trim the deficit back down to one at the 6:03 mark.
After Corrigan pushed the L-R lead back to two goals with his second goal of the half,
Robert Tucker scored twice in the final three minutes to even the score at the break. He netted the first off a nifty pass from Arcuri at 2:36 and tallied the unassisted equalizer at 1:17.
The Bears took control right at the start of the third quarter as Corrigan scored 45 seconds into the frame and Anthony Fraga netted a goal at 12:43 to push the home team back in front by two.
Arcuri put the Railsplitters back in the scoring column off an assist from Teresky with 6:13 left in the third, but L-R followed that up by tallying four unanswered goals. Moffat scored twice during that flurry, including a no-look goal at the 10:13 mark of the fourth quarter that gave the Bears a commanding 12-7 cushion.
The Railsplitters and Bears traded two goals apiece over the next passage until Golia scored his second goal of the match with 3:07 left to trim the deficit to 14-10. Lincoln Memorial was able to muster just one more goal the rest of the way, though, as Kopsky accounted for the final goal of the match with 1:45 remaining.
The loss drops Lincoln Memorial to 0-4 all-time against Lenoir-Rhyne.
The Railsplitters conclude the regular season with a three-game homestand beginning on Wednesday, April 11 with a matchup against Tuculum set for a 4 p.m. start.
