TIGERVILLE, S.C. –The seventh-seeded Lincoln Memorial University baseball team rallied from a 7-0 deficit to force extra innings, but fifth-seeded and No. 18 nationally-ranked UNC Pembroke (39-14) eliminated the Railsplitters from the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional with a heartbreaking walk-off double in the bottom of the 11
thinning to win 9-8 Saturday afternoon at Ashmore Park. The Railsplitters (36-21) conclude their 2018 campaign with a program-record-tying 36 wins.
The Railsplitters eliminated the Braves with an 11-6 win in last year's NCAA Division II Southeast Regional in the teams' only previous meeting, but UNC Pembroke was able to exact some revenge this time around. The Braves advance to face top-seeded North Greenville in another elimination game at noon on Sunday.
UNC Pembroke racked up 16 hits with Ethan Baucom leading the charge by going 6-for-6 with six singles, three runs scored—including the game winner—and two RBI. Trey Jacobs finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and a pair of doubles, including the game-winning two-bagger. Trevor Clemons added a pair of hits and stolen bases and scored three times.
Tyler Adams had three of LMU's 13 hits, all singles, and scored three runs.
Chris Salvey added two hits, including a two-run home run.
Nate Stinson also had two hits and delivered the clutch two-run single that tied the score in the top of the ninth.
Joe Bobiak started on the mound for the Railsplitters, but his outing was short-lived, as all six Braves the junior lefty faced recorded base hits. Four came around to score, and the only out Bobiak recorded in 24 pitches was a pickoff at second base. Roberto Rivera led off with a double, and five straight batters followed with singles. Baucom, Jackson and Hartings drove in runs on their hits, and Connor Grainger brought in the final run on a sac fly foul out.
The Braves' lead grew to 6-0 on Jacobs' two-run double in the bottom of the second.
UNC Pembroke added another run in the fourth on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.
Dominic Morabito made his first appearance since March 31 in relief of
Kevin Norton and retired the final two batters of the inning following the hit batter to leave the bases loaded.
Seth Hunt drove in LMU's first run of the game with a two-out line drive single to left field to drive in
Mason Ewers, who led off the inning with a double. Adams led off the following inning with a base hit up the middle, and Salvey's two-run blast cut the deficit to 7-3.
Lincoln Memorial kept chipping away at the deficit with two more runs in the top of the eighth without recording an RBI. Adams again led off with a single, and Salvey followed with an opposite-field base hit to right. A subsequent fielding error on the right fielder allowed Adams to score. Salvey later came around on a passed ball.
Landen Smith allowed four runs—three earned—in 7.0 innings of work. The lefty surrendered seven hits and two walks and struck out four across 113 pitches.
Morabito kept the Railsplitters in the game with 5.0 innings of one-run ball. The one blemish was a two-out Baucom RBI single in the bottom of the eighth. The senior righty allowed two hits and one walk and struck out five.
As the Railsplitters had done time and time again this season, the comeback magic continued in the top of the ninth. After two quick outs,
Will Reddick and Adams singled. Salvey then hit into a fielder's choice at third, but Adams beat the throw to second base. Wages was then hit by a pitch to push across one run.
Nate Stinson followed with a two-run base hit through the right side to tie the score at eight and complete the comeback.
Chase Randolph and Aaron Biggerstaff traded two scoreless innings apiece leading to the bottom of the 11
th. With one out, Baucom notched his sixth single. Jacobs then laced a ball into the right center gap that allowed Baucom to score the winning run all the way from first base. Randolph took his first loss of the year to finish his season at 3-1. Despite blowing the save in the ninth, Biggerstaff improved to 5-1.
