Lady Railsplitters fall to Carson-Newman in SAC opener

HARROGATE, Tenn. – Magda Mosengo scored twice to lead the visiting Carson-Newman Eagles (4-2, 2-0 SAC) to a 5-2 victory over Lincoln Memorial (3-2, 0-1 SAC) in LMU's conference opener Wednesday afternoon at the LMU Soccer Complex.

The long layoffs—seven days for Carson-Newman and 10 days for Lincoln Memorial due to postponements caused by Hurricane Florence— did not seem to affect either team offensively as three goals were scored in the opening five minutes. Familiar playmakers led the offensive display as Mosengo opened the scoring just 1:11 in for her fourth tally of the year. Jessica Cravero responded just over 90 seconds later by making a defender miss and beating the goalkeeper Jacqueline Burns for her fourth goal. That tie was short-lived, as Emilee Futrell again gave the Eagles a one-goal advantage in the fifth minute with her fifth score of the year.

Itzel Ballesteros nearly tied the score in the 30th minute when she found herself with just the keeper in front. She tried to flick the ball over, but her attempt sailed just high over the crossbar. However, she was able to redeem herself only 41 seconds later. Quick passes from Isa Jara then Maria Hernandez found their way to an open Ballesteros, who did not miss this time around as she planted the ball into the top right corner for her third goal of the year.

The Lady Railsplitters had another golden scoring chance in the 37th minute when an Alyssa Berry shot caromed off the post. The rebound went to Mariana Diaz, but her shot went wide right.

Carson-Newman stole the momentum just before halftime by taking the lead 3-2 with just 15 seconds remaining. Kristina Markfort attempted a cross that landed on goal and deflected off Ann-Marie O'Connell for her first career goal to send the Eagles into the break with the lead.

Mosengo added an insurance goal in the 62nd minute to put Carson-Newman ahead 4-2. Elena Propst connected with Mosengo inside the box, who lifted the ball past O'Connell into the right corner.

Carson-Newman added another goal in the 80th minute. O'Connell made a save on a Holly Talbut-Smith attempt but was injured on the play. The ball came out to Catarina Realista, who put the ball into the open net.

The Eagles outshot Lincoln Memorial 22-14 for the match, including 13-7 in the second half. Carson-Newman also held an 11-5 edge in shots on goal.

Lincoln Memorial resumes South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday, September 22 at Catawba. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. in Salisbury, N.C.
