NEWBERRY, S.C. — For the first time this season, the Lady Railsplitters were challenged to a fifth set.
In the winner-take-all moment, the Lincoln Memorial University women's volleyball team was up for the challenge, grinding out the 15-11 victory for a 3-2 win at Newberry College Friday night.
The five-set match LMU win, 25-15, 23-25, 25-16, 24-26, 15-11, keeps the Lady Railsplitters undefeated in South Atlantic Conference play, while keeping the Wolves winless.
LMU (7-2, 3-0 SAC) stormed out to an early 11-3 lead against Newberry (5-6, 0-4) in the first set before securing the 25-15 win behind five of
Rylee Storms' team-high 15 kills.
The Railsplitters then sputtered in the second and fourth sets, where they hit .000 and -.023, respectively, which resulted in two set losses.
But LMU gained back ground in its other three sits, hitting .379 in the opening set before finishing the third set with a .312-hit percentage and .179 in the final set for an overall .141 percentage compared to the Wolves' .116.
Behind Storms' 15 kills,
Kai Wesemann and
Tone Gill had 11 a piece.
Emily Walter continued her assist success, passing across 39 while sitting third on the team with 16 digs.
Erica Whiteaker, the new career record holder in digs, kept her stats rolling with 37 digs and eight assists.
Lindsey Nartker followed with 20 digs along with four aces.
The Lady Railsplitters will attempt to keep their winning streak going when they travel to Anderson University (14-1, 5-0 SAC) for the battle of the undefeated SAC teams Saturday at 2 p.m.
