KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — It was the start the Railsplitters wanted.
However, the finish wasn't.
The Lincoln Memorial University men's soccer team was breezing through the South Atlantic Conference match versus Anderson University, holding a two-goal lead all the way until the 85th minute when all momentum shifted.
The game-changer was the Trojans' Gabriel Homem, who netted back-to-back goals within a minute and a half to force overtime, and eventually a double-overtime, 2-2, draw at the Samson Sports Complex in Knoxville Saturday night.
Even with the game location and time being altered, due to the LMU Soccer Complex being swamped from the gobs of rain this past week, the Railsplitters executed like the home team under the night lights.
Victor Peres scored his fourth goal in as many games just four minutes after the first whistle. Then, it was
Miguel Reis connecting on a goal, which was assisted by
Felipe de Sousa, in the 40th minute for the second straight game.
It was a two-nil lead that the Railsplitters (3-2-2, 1-1-1 SAC) appeared to have secured, especially leading into the last stretch. But, the Trojans (2-3-1, 1-1-1), who attacked the net more in the second half with a handful of their 15 shots compared to a 17 total for LMU, found the equalizer.
Homem, now the team leader with three goals on the season, took a free kick from Jhon Vaca and headed it in, in the 85th minute to come within one score. He then took a rebound shot of his own, corralled it and twisted back towards the goal to connect on the game-tying goal with 86:40 remaining in the match, which secured the draw.
The Railsplitters will be back in action when they travel to Mars Hill Wednesday for another night SAC game at 7:30 p.m.
