YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Baylee Roche scored twice to lead the Young Harris Mountain Lions to a 2-0 win over the Lady Railsplitters on Wednesday evening at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
Lincoln Memorial (2-1) produced a lopsided 16-10 edge in shots, including a 7-6 advantage in terms of shots on goal, but Young Harris (1-1) used Roche's heroics to hand the Lady Railsplitters their first loss of the season for the second year in a row.
Roche, who also scored the game-winning goal in the Mountain Lions' 1-0 win over the Lady Railsplitters in 2017, dominated for Young Harris, accounting for four of the team's 10 shots and four of the six shots on goal.
After a 41-minute stalemate, Roche put the Mountain Lions on the board in the 42nd minute when she one-timed a perfectly-placed cross from Madison Putzer. The goal was scored off a quick counterattack as Putzer's pass was preceded by a long ball up the right sideline from Miranda Simpson.
The score remained 1-0 until the 81st minute, when a through ball from Maria Guzman slipped past an LMU defender onto the foot of Roche, who did the rest from just inside the box.
Itzel Ballesteros led the Lady Railsplitters with five shots and four shots on goal, while
Mariana Diaz tallied three shots and a shot on goal as well.
Jessica Cravero and
Caroline Souza finished with a pair of shot attempts apiece.
The Lady Railsplitters fell despite outshooting the host Mountain Lions in each half, producing a 10-5 edge in the first and a 6-5 cushion in the second.
Lincoln Memorial's junior keeper
Ann-Marie O'Connell suffered her first loss of the season after allowing both of Roche's goals and making four saves in 90 minutes of work.
The Lady Railsplitters will look to rebound from their first loss of the 2018 campaign on Sunday when they travel to USC Aiken for another matchup against a Peach Belt Conference foe. First touch is set for 1 p.m. in Aiken, S.C.
