SAC elites collide on Saturday as Railsplitters visit Catawba

SALISBURY, N.C. – Two of the top teams in the South Atlantic Conference collide on Saturday afternoon when the Railsplitters visit the Catawba Indians for a 4 p.m. tip-off inside of Goodman Gymnasium. 
 
Lincoln Memorial (10-3, 5-1 SAC) has won five consecutive games, while Catawba (12-2, 5-1 SAC) has won 11 of its last 12, including a run of four straight. Notes on the Indians 
 
- The Indians moved to 5-1 in SAC play with a 106-72 thrashing of Coker on Wednesday evening. Catawba shot 47 percent and went 26-for-31 at the free-throw line to power the win. Jordan McElveen led the way with 21 points, while Jameel Taylor had 15 points. Three other players finished with double figures as well for the Indians. 
- Catawba has won its last four games by margins of 34, 17, 21 and 22 points, respectively. The Indians last lost on December 19 when they suffered an 88-74 setback at Wingate. 
- Catawba is 6-1 at home this season with a run of five straight wins inside of Goodman Gymnasium. UNC Pembroke is the only team to beat the Indians on their home court, as the Braves pulled off an 80-75 overtime victory on November 10. 
- The Indians are a balanced offensive team with eight guys contributing at least seven points per game. Taylor leads the way with 14.9 points per appearances on 47 percent shooting, while Daquan Lilly and Marcell Haskett – a transfer from Lincoln Memorial – are putting up 12.4 and 12.3 points per game, respectively. Devin Cooper (9.5 ppg), Malik Constantine (8.3 ppg) and Ben Zemonek (7.9 ppg) have also been factors offensively. 
- Jeremy McLaughlin leads the team with 6.3 rebounds per contest. Taylor is adding 5.3 to go along with a team-high 4.3 assists per appearance. Lilly is chipping in 5.2 rebounds a game.
- Catawba is last in the SAC in three-point attempts per game with 18.4 and second-to-last in three-pointers made per game with 6.9. However, the Indians are second in the league in scoring with 88.9 points per game. Catawba makes a SAC-high 32 shots per night and leads the league in free-throw makes and attempts per contest. 
- The Indians are also second in the league in scoring defense by holding opponents to 72.7 points per game. 
- Catawba leads the SAC in rebounding margin, outrebounding its opponents by an average of eight boards per game. Only Tusculum has grabbed more offensive rebounds per game than the Indians (14.7) among SAC squads this season.  
- The Indians have already surpassed their win total from the entire 2017-18 campaign, when they finished ninth in the SAC with an 11-15 overall record. 
 
Last Time Out 
 
Sharpshooter Alex Dahling powered a 17-2 opening run as the Railsplitters bludgeoned Newberry 115-84 last Saturday at Tex Turner Arena to capture their fifth consecutive win. 
 
Dahling scored a career-high 24 points on a career-best eight three-pointers to help Lincoln Memorial hit a season-high scoring mark and surpass the 100-point mark for the second consecutive game. Cornelius Taylor and Anthony Brown were magnificent as well. Taylor scored 23 points and distributed a career-high 13 assists, while Brown scored a season-high 21 points on 7-for-9 shooting and led the team with 10 rebounds. 
 
The Railsplitters won their 29th straight regular-season home game and beat Newbery for the fourth consecutive time in the process. 
 
Tip-Ins 
 
- Lincoln Memorial has been on a tear offensively, shooting 48 percent or better while scoring 80 points or more in four straight games. The Railsplitters shot a season-high 55.6 percent in Saturday's win over Newberry. 
- The Railsplitters have hit at least 16 three-pointers in three straight games. They head to Salisbury leading the SAC in three-point attempts (33.5) and makes (12.3) per game. 
- Brown has scored 20 points or more in back-to-back games. Over that span, the junior has hit 14 of his 18 shot attempts, snagged 18 rebounds and dished out 12 assists while turning it over just two times. 
- Lincoln Memorial will be striving for its first quality road win of the season. All three of the Railsplitters' losses have come against teams with winning records on the road: USC Aiken (12-1), Christian Brothers (8-6) and Queens (14-2). Those three losses were decided by an average margin of 15 points. 
- The Railsplitters average 78.8 points per game on 40 percent shooting and a 27 percent clip from three on the road compared to 98.4 points per game on 51 percent shooting at home. 
- Kamaran Calhoun and Brown are among the most efficient shooters in the SAC, as Calhoun ranks second in the league in field-goal percentage at 63.6 percent and Brown is fourth with a 59.8 percent mark.
- The Railsplitters are currently tied with Catawba for second in the SAC standings. LMU and Catawba sit only a game back of league-leading Queens, who narrowly escaped Newberry with a 96-94 win on Wednesday. 
 
Series History 
 
- The Railsplitters have won 11 straight and 15 of the last 16 overall against Catawba. Lincoln Memorial has not lost to the Indians since dropping a 73-63 decision in Salisbury on February 2, 2013. 
- LMU has won the last six games in the series by double figures, including a 90-61 road win last season. The Railsplitters also demolished the Indians 103-58 at Tex Turner Arena in December 2017. 
- All time, LMU boasts a 21-11 record against the Indians, but Catawba owns an 8-7 edge on its home court.
