Notes on Mars Hill

- The Lions suffered their third straight loss on Saturday with a heart-breaking 93-86 double-overtime setback at Lenoir-Rhyne. Matthew Powell led Mars Hill with a season-high 20 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Chris Barnette chipped in 17 points and nine boards.
- Mars Hill is seeking its first win of 2019. The Lions last tasted victory on December 19 when they topped Carson-Newman 87-74.
- Despite allowing the third-most points per game in the SAC (78.4), Mars Hill is one of the most efficient defensive teams in the league, holding opponents to 40.7 percent shooting overall and a 28.2 percent mark from three.
- The Lions are also one of the better rebounding teams in the SAC, ranking first in rebounds per game with 44.2, second in rebounding margin at plus 5.9 and second in defensive rebounds per game with 31.4. On top of that, Mars Hill is fourth in the SAC with 12.8 offensive rebounds per contest.
- Junior guard Ja'Shawn Brooks leads the SAC in scoring with 21.2 points per game. He is shooting 48 percent from the field and 49 percent from three on 6.0 three-point attempts per contest.
- Freshman guard Javonte Cook and sophomore guard Austin Gilyard are also contributing double figures per game with 12.3 and 10.3 points per, respectively. Cook is shooting 53 percent from the field while Gilyard is at 34 percent.
- Cook also leads the team with 8.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game. Brooks is second on the team with 6.8 rebounds per game and leads the way with 2.9 assists per outing.
- Mars Hill has been a different team at home, where the Lions are 5-1 and average 88.2 points per game on 40 percent shooting from three. Away from their home court, the Lions are 1-6 and average 74.3 points per game.
- Mars Hill gets to the free-throw line an average of 24 times per game, the third-highest rate in the conference.
- Dating back to the start of the 2017-18 campaign, the Lions are just 2-24 in South Atlantic Conference play. Mars Hill hasn't finished higher than 10th place in the league since a ninth-place run in 2010-11 when there were only 10 teams in the conference.

Last Time Out

Catawba broke a 44-44 halftime stalemate by scoring 15 unanswered points early in the second half to hand the Railsplitters a 96-83 loss on Saturday in Salisbury, N.C., snapping Lincoln Memorial's season-long, five-game winning streak.

In that loss, which dropped Lincoln Memorial to 2-4 on the road this season, the Railsplitters allowed the Indians to shoot 49 percent from the field, including a 52 percent mark in the second half. The 96 points allowed were also the most LMU has conceded in a regulation game since December 17, 2016.

The Railsplitters also turned the ball over a season-high 20 times, which directly led to 30 points for the Indians.

For the third straight game, Anthony Brown set a new season-high mark by scoring 22 points on 5-for-7 shooting and a 12-for-13 mark from the free-throw line. Cameron Henry added 18 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Cornelius Taylor had 15 points before fouling out after only 26 minutes of work.

The loss was LMU's first to Catawba since February 2013, ending an 11-game winning streak in the series.

Tip-Ins

- The Railsplitters are 7-0 at Tex Turner Arena this season, where they are averaging 98.4 points per game, shooting 51 percent from the floor and winning by an average margin of nearly 30 points per game, a figure bolstered by 50-point wins over Paine and North Greenville. However, on the road LMU is scoring just 79.5 points per game, shooting 41 percent and being outscored by an average of 7.8 points per game.
- Brown has been unstoppable in his last three games, scoring 20, 21 and 22 points, respectively. He is a combined 19-for-25 from the field and 24-for-26 at the free-throw line over that span.
- Lincoln Memorial leads the SAC in field-goal percentage defense by holding opponents to 39.4 percent shooting. Strangely, teams are hitting 35 percent of their three-point attempts against the LMU defense, though, which is second-to-last in the league.
- LMU hasn't lost back-to-back SAC games since falling to Anderson and Carson-Newman in succession in February 2012.
- Henry has hit double figures in four of his last six games, including a career-high 18 points in the loss at Catawba. He is currently ranked fourth on the team in points per game with 9.3.
