HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lincoln Memorial men's basketball team will try for its fifth consecutive win when it concludes a four-game homestand on Saturday afternoon against the surging Newberry Wolves.
The Railsplitters (9-3, 4-1 SAC), who are 6-0 this season at Tex Turner Arena and 84-5 over the past six seasons, will tip-off against Newberry (4-5, 1-2 SAC) in their South Atlantic Conference clash at 4 p.m. Live stats and video links are available at www.lmurailsplitters.com, while in-game updates will also be provided on the official LMU athletics Twitter page, @LMURailsplitter.
Notes on the Wolves
- Since losing four of its first five games, Newberry has reeled off three consecutive victories over Mars Hill (92-83), Benedict (81-73) and Warren Wilson (117-85). Their 117-point outburst against Warren Wilson on December 11 was the team's highest offensive output of the season.
- Saturday will be the Wolves' first game since that win at Warren Wilson more than three weeks ago.
- Newberry's in-your-face press defense has helped the Wolves rank 22nd in the nation in turnovers forced per game with 17.9. However, Newberry is allowing opposing offenses to shoot 47 percent from the field and average 85 points per game.
- The Wolves have offset their ball-hawking defense with carelessness on offense, as Newberry has been among the most turnover prone teams in the nation, ranking 303rd out of 306 teams with 18.7 per game.
- Newberry is scoring 85.2 points per game while shooting a hair under 45 percent from the field. The Wolves average nearly 10 made three-pointers per contest.
- The junior trio of Marshall Lange, Luke Gibson and Angelo Sales Jr. leads the Wolves. Lange is averaging 15.3 points and 3.2 assists per game, while Gibson and Sales Jr. are contributing 11.7 and 11.6 points per game, respectively. Sales Jr. also paces the team with 8.0 rebounds per.
- Underclassmen Marquis Collins and Omari Wilson are averaging 8.4 and 8.0 points per game, respectively. Collins is second on the team in rebounding with 6.8 per.
- Sikander Nielsen led the Wolves in the win over Warren Wilson with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Lange had the next highest point total with 16 points to go along with six assists.
- The Wolves are allowing 52 percent shooting and nearly 90 points per game against SAC opponents.
Last Time Out
Everything was clicking for the Railsplitters in their 2019 debut, as Lincoln Memorial recorded its season-high point total in a 109-59 destruction of North Greenville on New Year's Day at Tex Turner Arena.
Offensively, the Railsplitters buried 16 three-pointers while shooting 52.5 percent from the floor. Four players hit double figures, led by
Anthony Brown's spectacular 20-point, 8-rebound, 7-assist, 4-steal performance.
Cornelius Taylor added 15 points.
Defensively, Lincoln Memorial held North Greenville to 37 percent shooting and scored 33 points off 23 Crusader turnovers. On the other end of the spectrum, the Railsplitters turned it over just five times total and only once through the first 32 minutes.
The win extended the Railsplitters' current winning streak to four games and regular-season home winning streak to 28 games.
Tip-Ins
- The Railsplitters are starting to gain some momentum offensively after a slow start. Lincoln Memorial shot 43 percent from the field and 33 percent from three during the first month of the season, but have since shot 46.6 percent overall and 38 percent from three.
- Lincoln Memorial fell one shy of its season-high mark for assists in Tuesday's win over North Greenville, recording 26 assists on 42 made baskets. It was LMU's fifth 20-assist performance of the season and second straight.

Anthony Brown has the ninth-best assist-to-turnover ratio in the nation with 3.38. He's produced three games this season with at least five assists and no turnovers.
- The Railsplitters are ranked sixth nationally in three-pointers per game with 12.0. LMU has been absolutely deadly from long range at home, hitting at least 13 triples in five of its six games at Tex Turner Arena. - The Railsplitters are 20-7 all-time against Newberry and have won 11 of the last 12 meetings in the series.
- The Wolves are, however, responsible for Lincoln Memorial's last regular-season home loss when they beat the Railsplitters 107-102 at Tex Turner Arena on December 17, 2016.
- LMU has scored at least 90 points in seven straight matchups against Newberry and hit the 100-point mark five times over that span.
- The Railsplitters swept the regular-season series in 2017-18, winning 117-95 at Tex Turner and 98-94 at Newberry. LMU also had to pull out a squeaker two years ago in Newberry in a 92-85 win.
