HARROGATE, Tenn. – An early run and a career-night from
Maggie Jachimczuk propelled the LMU women's basketball team to the wire-to-wire 86-66 win over UVa-Wise Monday evening.
The win improved LMU to 7-6 overall while UVa-Wise fell to 5-7 with the loss in the last meeting between the two schools as non-conference opponents. The Highland Cavs will become members of the South Atlantic Conference in July.
Emily Griffith led LMU for the sixth straight contest as she had 22 points off of 8-for-15 shooting from the field and a 5-of-6 performance from the free throw line in addition to two blocks. Jachimczuk had a pair of career highs in her second double-double of the season as she had 17 points and 14 rebounds, both new personal bests for the sophomore.
Sydney Newsome chipped in 15 points and
Rachel Griffith had ten points.
Dasia Maxwell flirted with a double-double as she had seven points and ten rebounds.
LMU dominated on the boards by a 59-31 advantage and held UVa-Wise to 32.9 percent shooting for the game while having one of their better offensive outputs of the season by going 27-64 from the field.
"I thought we did a great job on the boards tonight," said LMU coach
Krystal Evans. "It was a great overall team win that we can build on."
LMU never trailed in the contest, though the Cavs did tie the game at 2-2.
Rachel Griffith then hit a basket and converted the free throw to spark an 8-0 run by the Blue and Gray. The Lady Railsplitters would shoot 53.3 percent for the half while holding the Cavs to 23.3 percent from the field and also out-rebound them by a 26-18 margin for the half.
The Cavs would cut the lead to 23-15 with 7:23 left in the second quarter, but LMU then exploded for a 21-8 run to close out the half with a 44-23 advantage.
Wise would make a run in the third and cut the lead to 10 on three occasions as they began to feed the ball in to forward Cynita Webb, who scored 15 of her game-high 25 points in the third quarter. For the stanza, the Cavs shot 55.6 percent from the field, 42.9 percent from three-point range, and 83.3 percent from the line. Each time, LMU would weather the run and never allowed the score to get under double-digits.
But as hot as they were in the third quarter, the Cavs went just as cold in the fourth as they went 31.6 percent from the field and 0-8 from behind the arc. LMU also took advantage of fouls by UVa-Wise to hit 15 free throws in the final frame to help seal the 86-66 win.
The loss spoiled a career night for Webb as the Wise junior had a career high 25 points. Judy Kalynn Cummings chipped in nine points off of three three-pointers.
LMU will return to SAC play this weekend as they will visit Catawba for the first time this season. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. in Salisbury, North Carolina.
