BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lincoln Memorial and Lynn split a nonconference doubleheader on Friday afternoon at the Lynn Baseball Field.
The Railsplitters (6-4) led wire-to-wire in game one, extending their winning streak to six games with a 9-4 victory. The Fighting Knights (6-2) rebounded in game two by winning a back-and-forth decision 7-5.
The two teams will decide the series on Saturday at noon.
Game One: Lincoln Memorial 9, Lynn 4
A dominant pitching performance by
Ethan Elliott and
Chris Salvey's four-RBI game guided the Railsplitters to a mostly stress-free win in the opener.
Elliott allowed only two singles as Lynn didn't even get a runner as far as second base during the lefty's six-inning stint. The Knoxville, Tenn., native fanned seven and walked only one to move to 2-1 on the season.
Behind Salvey's big day, the LMU offense did a load of damage with 12 hits, including five extra-base knocks and three homers. The Railsplitters scored nine unanswered runs to start the game before the Fighting Knights picked it up late.
Salvey went 2-for-4 with four RBI, a double and a three-run home run that capped a four-run first inning that gave the Railsplitters a lead they would not relinquish.
Alex Allen and
Joe Stucky also homered, while
Seth Hunt had multiple hits for the fourth time in five games with a 3-for-5 showing that included an RBI and a double.
Will Reddick also had a pair of singles with an RBI.
The Railsplitters made it a day to forget for Lynn starting pitcher Nicholis Prather.
In the top of the first, Lincoln Memorial opened the game with five straight hits, including a RBI single for Reddick and Salvey's three-run dinger that made it a 4-0 right off the bat.
The Railsplitters added to their lead in the third with a sac fly for Hunt, which scored
Brent Richey after the right fielder led off the inning by reaching on an error.
Salvey doubled home another run in the fourth and
Nate Stinson was walked in the next at-bat to officially bring Prather's day to an end. He took the loss after allowing five earned runs and eight hits in three-plus innings.
The Lynn bullpen wasn't able to slow down the Railsplitters too much, either, as Lincoln Memorial tacked on two more runs in the fifth on a two-run home run for Allen. It was the first home run of Allen's career as the senior scored Hunt on that swing and extended the lead to 8-0.
The Railsplitters hammered their third long ball of the game in the top of the seventh, when Stucky led off with a solo shot to left field to make it 9-0.
The Fighting Knights finally got some offense going in the latter innings, but could never completely recover from falling into that 9-0 hole.
Anthony Sanabria put Lynn on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run shot off reliever
Jake Grenus.
Alec Ojeda then led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo homer, setting another rally in motion. A walk and a wild pitch put another runner in scoring position, and Joshua LaPrest scored him with a single off reliever
Eli Wright to cut the deficit to 9-4.
Wright picked off LaPrest at first for the second out of the inning, but allowed two singles and a walk after that to load the bases. He wiggled out of the jam, though, by striking out James Buckley with a 3-2 pitch.
Lynn never threatened again as
Devin Morris worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to secure the victory.
Cal Bocchino was the only Lynn player with multiple hits in the game as the first baseman went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.
Game Two: Lynn 7, Lincoln Memorial 5
The Railsplitters fell behind 4-1 after three innings, but rallied to take a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth. That was short-lived, though, as LaPrest belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to send the Fighting Knights to victory.
Salvey had another monster game, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Henry Moore also posted three hits, finishing a double shy of the cycle with a home run, a triple and three RBI. Stucky went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Joe Bobiak made the start for the Railsplitters, lasting 4.1 innings in the no decision. The lefty allowed 10 hits and six earned runs, but was taken off the hook for the loss by the fifth-inning rally.
Patrick Queener was saddled with the loss instead after giving up the three-run bomb in the fifth. He falls to 0-1 on the season.
Lynn jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first following an RBI triple by Shayne Fontana and a run-scoring double for Alejandro Martinez.
Moore's solo shot in the top of the third cut the Fighting Knights' lead in half, but Lynn put two more runs on the board in the bottom of that inning with RBI hits for Bocchino and LaPrest.
Moore again came through in the fourth with a two-out, two-run triple that brought the Railsplitters back within a run and set the stage for the top of the fifth.
That inning, Allen sparked the rally by being hit by a pitch, while Stinson followed with a double to put runners on second and third. A wild pitch brought Allen home and tied the game before Salvey laced a single to left field to score Stinson and give the Railsplitters the lead.
However, Lynn quickly retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth when LaPrest hammered an 0-0 pitch over the wall in right field, giving the Fighting Knights a 7-5 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
LMU put two runners on in the sixth following singles for Stucky and Moore, but a line out and strikeout ended the threat. A throwing error brought the potential tying run to the plate again in the seventh, but a groundout and fly out closed things out for Lynn.
