NEWBERRY, S.C. – The final five-game stretch of the regular season begins for the Railsplitters on Saturday afternoon as the Newberry Wolves entertain Lincoln Memorial for a South Atlantic Conference tussle at 4 p.m. inside of Eleazer Arena.
The Railsplitters (17-6, 11-4 SAC) wrapped up their nonconference slate on Wednesday night by dismantling Hiwassee 107-54 at Tex Turner Arena. That effort extended Lincoln Memorial's winning streak to three games.
Newberry (9-14, 4-11 SAC) saw its humble two-game winning streak ended on Wednesday night by nationally-ranked Queens, which manhandled the Wolves 115-84 in Charlotte, N.C.
High stakes will be in play for both teams on Saturday. The Railsplitters are trying to maintain their second-place SAC standing and inch closer to locking down a top-four conference seed. Newberry, meanwhile, is trying to work its way back into SAC tournament contention, as the Wolves are currently in ninth place and two games back of eighth-place Carson-Newman.

Notes on Newberry
- The Wolves were hanging right with Queens on Wednesday night, trailing just 34-32 with four minutes to go in the first half. However, the Royals closed the half with a 14-3 spurt and never looked back. Four players reached double figures for Newberry, led by Angelo Sales Jr.'s 19 points in only 14 minutes.
- Newberry pulled off one of the bigger upsets in the conference this season last week with a 103-101 win over Lenoir-Rhyne, which entered that game in second place in the SAC standings and as winners in eight of its last nine games.
- The Wolves have struggled mightily away from Eleazer Arena with a 4-10 overall record in either road or neutral site contests. However, Newberry has been much better at home with a 5-4 record. Even in losses, the Wolves have been tough to beat at home, as Queens and Anderson escaped with two and three-point wins, respectively. Tusculum also needed double-overtime to overcome the Wolves in Newberry.
- Newberry's platoon style means that almost everybody plays and contributes offensively. Twelve players have appeared in over 12 games while averaging over 10 minutes of playing time per appearance. Ten different guys are pitching in at least five points per game.
- Marshall Lange leads the team with 14.8 points per game, Sales Jr. is adding 13.6 and Luke Gibson is the only other Wolf with a double-digit scoring average with 11.9 points per appearance.
- Sales Jr. is grabbing a team-high 7.8 rebounds per game. Lange leads the team with 3.1 assists per contest, and also is tied with Gibson for the team-lead in steals per game with 1.0.
- The Wolves remain the highest-scoring team in the conference with 89.1 points per game, including 90.3 in SAC play. Newberry also accounts for around 11 threes and 18 free throws per game, both among the highest marks in the conference.
- Newberry also remains a sieve defensively, though, allowing a league-worst 90.6 points per game on 48 percent shooting. The Wolves are surrendering a mind-blowing 96.8 points per game in SAC play.
- The Wolves crash the offensive glass hard, ranking third in the league with 13.4 second-chance opportunities per game.
Last Time Out
The Railsplitters gave four starters the night off to rest and recover from some nagging injuries and illnesses, but it didn't make much of a difference in a 53-point obliteration of Hiwassee on Wednesday night.
Lincoln Memorial hit a season-high 21 three-pointers, tied for the second-most in program history, and led 55-18 at the half. Eight different players connected on at least one three.
Courvoisier McCauley matched a career-high mark with 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to notch his first career double-double.
Julius Brown added 19 points, while
Cornelius Taylor chipped in 17 points, eight assists, six rebounds and five steals.
The Railsplitters shot 51 percent and went 21-for-43 from three. Hiwassee shot just 32 percent with a dreadful 7-for-27 mark from three.
Tip-Ins
- The Railsplitters enter Saturday's game tied with Catawba for second place in the SAC standings. Lincoln Memorial and Catawba will face one another next Saturday at Tex Turner Arena in the penultimate game of the regular season.
- McCauley has scored exactly 23 points in two of his last three appearances. The freshman is still searching for some consistency, though, as he has also scored zero points in two of his last four outings.
- Lincoln Memorial hopes to have
Kamaran Calhoun,
Anthony Brown,
Cameron Henry and
Alex Dahling all back after that quartet set out the game against Hiwassee.
- Aside from a 96-76 win at Coker, the Railsplitters have not had any easy road wins this season. Last Saturday, Lincoln Memorial escaped Wingate with a 67-64 win thanks to Taylor's last-second three. That moved the Railsplitters to 5-5 on the road this season.
- Dahling needs six more three-pointers to reach 100 for his career. He would be the 20th player in program history to hit triple-figure threes.
Series History
- The Railsplitters are 21-7 all-time against Newberry and have won 12 of the last 13 overall, including a run of four straight.
- LMU crushed the Wolves 115-84 back on January 5 at Tex Turner Arena. Taylor, Dahling and
Anthony Brown all surpassed 20 points in the victory.
- The Wolves have almost always played LMU tough at home. Last season, the Railsplitters escaped with a 98-94 victory. The year before that, the Railsplitters had to rally from a 23-point deficit in a 92-85 win.
- In spite of that, Lincoln Memorial has not lost at Newberry since February 27, 2010.
