Slow start dooms LMU at Newberry, 66-52

NEWBERRY, S.C. – A slow start and ice cold shooting proved to be a bad combination for the LMU women's basketball team as they fell at Newberry 66-52 Saturday afternoon.

LMU hit 20.8 percent for the game from the field and 12.4 percent from three-point range, while Newberry went 46.2 percent from the field and an even 50 percent from long-range as they hit nine three-pointers. The Lady Railsplitters did out-rebound the Wolves, by a 47-40 margin.

Emily Griffith led LMU with 22 points, while Rachel Griffith chipped in 15 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Shermeria Quarles also had eight rebounds to help lead the team.

Four Newberry players scored in double figures, led by Meg Essex with 16 points. Brandi Hall led NC on the boards with ten.

The Wolves ran out to a 7-0 start before LMU got on the board with 6:38 remaining in the first quarter on a pair of Emily Griffith free throws. Another basket by the senior less than a minute later cut the lead to 7-4, but Newberry then went on a 13-4 run and LMU never again was closer than nine points for the rest of the half.

Newberry kept the lead at around the 12-to-14 point mark for the rest of the half and a large portion of the third quarter before LMU cut the lead to 48-40 with 51 seconds remaining in the stanza following a three-pointer by Sydney Duggins. The Wolves answered back with a trey of their own to put the lead back at eleven heading into the fourth quarter.

LMU would cut the lead to nine on two more occasions, but the Wolves converted free throws down the stretch to hold on for the 66-52 win and the season sweep of LMU.
