Railsplitters collide with Catawba in regular-season home finale on Saturday

2/22/2019 9:55:00 AM

HARROGATE, Tenn. – Massive postseason implications will be on the line on Saturday evening when the Railsplitters close out the regular-season home schedule and celebrate Senior Day with a South Atlantic Conference matchup against the Catawba Indians.

Lincoln Memorial (19-6, 13-4 SAC), which was ranked seventh in the initial Southeast Region poll and sits alone in second place in the SAC standings, captured its fifth consecutive win on Wednesday night with a 104-82 victory over Mars Hill.

The Indians (19-6, 12-5 SAC), who are currently ranked two spots ahead of the Railsplitters in the Southeast Region poll and a game back of LMU in the SAC standings, nearly upset No. 10 Queens on Wednesday night, but fell in heartbreaking fashion in the final seconds, 91-87. Prior to that, Catawba had won six straight games.

Lincoln Memorial will be trying to avenge a 96-83 loss to Catawba earlier this season when the two teams tip off at 4 p.m. inside of Tex Turner Arena. Notes on Catawba

- For the second time this season, the Indians fell just short in their upset bid of the nationally-ranked Queens Royals on Wednesday night. Catawba led by as many as 11 points in the second half and was nursing a two-point lead in the final minute until the Royals closed with a 6-0 spurt to steal a 91-87 victory.
- The Indians also suffered an 87-86 home loss to Queens back on January 16 after leading by as many as 10 points in the second half. Kenny Dye buried the go-ahead three with 13 seconds left to send the Royals home with the win.
- Prior to that gut-wrenching loss at Queens, Catawba had been absolute dominant during its six-game winning streak, topping Carson-Newman by 15, Coker by 25, Mars Hill by 23, Wingate by nine, Newberry by 15 and Tusculum by 17.
- The Indians' six losses this season have come by a total margin of 34 points. Five of the six have been decided by a single-digit margin aside from a random 14-point loss at Wingate back on December 19. Four of the six have also come against teams ranked in the Southeast Region rankings.
- Catawba is arguably the deepest team in the conference with eight guys averaging over six points per game, including four with at least 11. LMU transfer Marcell Haskett leads the team with 15.0 points per game on 48 percent shooting from three, while Jameel Taylor is putting up 14.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. Daquan Lilly and Devin Cooper are adding 11.0 points per game as well.
- The Indians are a terrific offensive team that is averaging a hair under 88 points per game on 49 percent shooting and a 38 percent mark from three. Catawba also crashes the offensive glass hard with 13.8 offensive boards per game.
- It's no surprise that Catawba is awesome on the defensive end as well, holding opponents to 42 percent shooting overall and a 32 percent clip from three. The Indians are giving up only 74.4 points per game – the second-lowest figure allowed in the SAC.
- The Indians are outrebounding their opponents by 6.4 rebounds per game, good for the second-best rebounding margin in the league.
- Haskett has been on an absolute tear of late with at least 16 points in six straight games, including a 27-point performance at Queens, a 25-point blowout against Carson-Newman and a 35-point night against Newberry.
- Taylor has double figures in five straight games as well, highlighted by back-to-back 19-point nights against Mars Hill and Coker.

Last Time Out

A 21-5 run that consumed a seven-minute stretch of the second half powered the Railsplitters in a 104-82 blowout of Mars Hill on Wednesday night.

Lincoln Memorial shot 49 percent and buried 13 three-pointers, while Mars Hill managed to shoot just 38 percent with a 6-for-25 mark from three. The Railsplitters also demolished the Lions on the backboards, 50-34.

Five players hit double figures for the Railsplitters, led by Courvoisier McCauley's 19 points and six rebounds. Cameron Henry posted his first career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Rhondi Hackett and Julius Brown had 13 points apiece.

LMU beat Mars Hill for the 20th consecutive time and improved to 12-1 at Tex Turner Arena this season with the victory.

Tip-Ins

- The freshman trio of McCauley, Henry and Brown have been carrying the LMU offensive attack in recent weeks. McCauley has scored at least 17 points in four of his last five games, including a 19-point effort against Mars Hill on Wednesday. Henry has three straight games with 14-plus points, while Brown has at least 13 points in four consecutive games.
- Kamaran Calhoun has been sidelined for the past two games but hopes to make his return to the lineup against Catawba. The redshirt-junior is averaging 11.5 points per game and leads the league in field-goal percentage at 60.9 percent.
- A win would give the Railsplitters their 10th straight 20-win season. Prior to head coach Josh Schertz's arrival, Lincoln Memorial had not won 20 games in a season since the 1988-89 team went 25-5.
- The Railsplitters will only their one and only senior, Steven Perriere, prior to Saturday's game. The Paris, France native have made 39 career appearances in the Blue and Gray and scored a career-high 13 points against Hiwassee last season.
- The Railsplitters have five players ranked in the top 25 in the SAC in terms of three-pointers made. Alex Dahling has a team-high 64, while Cornelius Taylor is just off that pace with 62. McCauley has 48, Brown has 39 and Henry has 36. As a team, LMU leads the SAC with 295 made threes, which is ranked fourth in program history.
