HARROGATE, Tenn. – It's the scenario that plays out in the dreams of hundreds of players each year – hitting the game-winning shot on your Senior Day. For
Emily Griffith, the dream came true as she scored the final five points of the game to complete LMU's 70-69 comeback over Catawba in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon.
It wasn't easy, as a game that featured 14 ties and eight lead changes up to the final minute saw both LMU (15-11, 10-8 SAC) and Catawba (13-12, 8-10 SAC) battle for two and a half quarters before the Catawba Indians then took the lead and extended it to a 63-54 lead midway through the fourth quarter.
A pair of
Dasia Maxwell free throws, followed by a steal and a lay-up by
Emily Griffith helped spark the comeback as they cut the lead to five with 3:28 remaining. Catawba then missed a basket in the paint that was rebounded by
Addi Kirkpatrick. On the ensuing possession, freshman
Lindsay Proffitt showed why she is the SAC's three-point leader as she took a pass from a driving
Emily Griffith and then drained her second trey of the game to cut the lead to 63-61.
Madison Hallman then hit a three-pointer to give Catawba a five-point cushion, but LMU cut it to one a couple of minutes later. Catawba's Talia Barnes then hit a basket and a free throw to make the lead 69-65 with 40 seconds remaining. Then came the comeback.
LMU head coach
Krystal Evans called a timeout to advance the ball. On the inbounds, the home fans got to see some twin action one more time as
Rachel Griffith threw the inbound pass to a streaking Emily, who hit the layup and was fouled. She then converted the free throw to cut the lead to 69-68.
Emily Griffith then stole the ball after Catawba had crossed mid-court and drove it in for a fast-break lay-up and the ninth lead change of the game with 23 seconds remaining, which was LMU's first lead since the middle of the third quarter.
Catawba then had two chances to score, but missed both shots as LMU held on for the 70-69 win.
Emily Griffith led the way for the Blue and Gray with 15 points, three rebounds, two steals and two assists. Her twin sister Rachel also had a nice Senior Day as she finished with 11 points and four assists. Maxwell, a fellow senior, finished with 10 points, as did Proffitt.
LMU out-shot Catawba 39.7 percent to 38.5 percent from the field for the game, and out-rebounded the Catawba Indians 42-38.
Barnes led Catawba with 15 points and seven rebounds, including a perfect 7-of-7 performance at the free throw line. Madison Hallman scored 13 points, while Shemya Stanbeck had a double-double with 12 points and ten rebounds and Taisha DeShazo also chipped in 12 points.
