Electric first half powers Railsplitters in 95-72 win over Anderson

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Railsplitters put forth one of their best halves of the season to plow through the Anderson Trojans on Wednesday night at Tex Turner Arena.

Lincoln Memorial (15-6, 10-4 SAC) shot 70 percent and scored 61 points in the first half, racing out to a 31-point halftime lead, to defeat Anderson (12-10, 6-8 SAC) for the 13th straight time with a wire-to-wire 95-72 triumph.

The 61-point half was the highest of the season for the Railsplitters and was more than enough to compensate for a lackluster second half, which saw the Trojans outscore Lincoln Memorial 42-34 to cut the final margin to 23 points.

Courvoisier McCauley and Cornelius Taylor carried the offense all night for the Railsplitters. McCauley scored a career-high 23 points, with 19 of those points coming in the opening half. The freshman went 9-for-14 from the floor and 5-for-8 from three while adding six boards. Taylor, meanwhile, scored 19 points with 12 coming in the first half.

Three other players hit double figures for the Railsplitters, who finished shooting 52 percent while holding the visiting Trojans to 36 percent shooting, including a dreadful 28 percent effort in the first frame.

LMU, which assisted on 20 of its 37 made baskets, was able to shake out of a recent offensive slump that saw the team shoot 38 percent or lower and combine for just 47 made baskets in its last two outings.

Anthony Brown chipped in 13 points with six rebounds and five assists, Kamaran Calhoun had 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds with five assists, and Alex Dahling scored 10 points with six boards. Steven Perriere also contributed seven quick points in only seven minutes off the bench.

The end result was never really in question after the Railsplitters' dominant first half.

After Anderson cut the Railsplitters' lead to 12-10 at the 14:23 mark of the opening half, Lincoln Memorial rattled off seven unanswered points as part of a larger 15-2 spurt that made it a 27-12 game with just over 10 minutes left. Taylor and McCauley powered the stretch by combining for 10 of LMU's 15 points.

The Railsplitters continued to push the pace as back-to-back buckets from Brown extended the lead to 36-16, while Brown finished off an old-fashioned three-point play to make it 42-20 with 6:35 left in the half.

Lincoln Memorial kept its foot on the throttle down the closing stretch, as Anderson accounted for just 10 made baskets in the first half compared to the Railsplitters' 23.

The Railsplitters were unable to maintain their momentum in the second half as the Trojans opened the final 20 minutes with a 9-2 push to cut the margin to 64-40. But Lincoln Memorial quickly extended it back to 31 with two buckets from Brown and a three-point play for Cameron Henry

Anderson countered with another 8-0 run after that to trim the lead back down to 23, and eventually pulled to within 21 at 73-52 at the 10-minute mark, but that's as low as it would get the rest of the way.

The Trojans did, however, shoot 47 percent in the second half to make up ground after falling behind by 31 at the break.

Randall Shaw led Anderson with 16 points on 4-for-14 shooting, while Shawn Benard contributed 12 points. Gage Ellis and Andrew Boynton had 10 points apiece, while no other Trojan finished with more than seven.

With the win, LMU head coach Josh Schertz moved into sole possession of second place in South Atlantic Conference history in terms of conference wins, surpassing former Catawba coach Jim Baker with his 174th league win.
