Quick Hits
-After leaving Mary Mars Gym with a 3-0 record Jan. 13, the Railsplitters (5-4) come back losing the last four of six matches.
-Of those four losses, LMU fell to Division I powerhouses Southern California and No. 14-ranked Ohio State. The Railsplitters also dropped five-set matches versus No. 15-ranked Grand Canyon and most recently King University.
-The Railsplitters put up a fight in every single loss, getting swept only once (USC), while taking two sets off Grand Canyon and King and one versus Ohio State.
-The toughest loss to swallow was the one versus King, where LMU hurt itself with 25 service errors to lose its fifth straight one to the Tornado (0-5).
-This weekend is an opportunity for the Railsplitters, who are led by
Evan Cory in kills (141), service aces (23) and digs (50), to get back on track and regain their groove ahead of the trip to top-ranked Hawaii Feb. 15-17.
Notes on Coker
-The Cobras (3-3) are in the Independent Volleyball Association alongside the Railsplitters, and come into Harrogate following a 3-2 victory over Mount Olive.
-Led by Joao Victor Santos in kills with 89, Coker sports a .207 hitting percentage through six matches compared to the Railsplitters' .301. Gabriel Castro is next with 66.
-With three more games under their belts, three Railsplitters —
Pedro Carvalho (51), Cory (33) and
Dawson Walker (21) — have more blocks than Coker's leader Max Kuntz, who has 14, to match LMU's
Jordan Walley's 14 blocks. Meanwhile, the two teams are pretty even dig wise. Coker averages 7.61 per set while LMU has 8.3.
-Since the Cobras defeated the Railsplitters in their first-ever meeting, LMU has won the next three, leading the series 3-1.
Notes on Erskine
-The Fleet have had an up-and-down season so far, losing their first four matches of the season and then winning the next four of seven, including the last two straight.
-Erskine is 1-4 on the road this season, dropping matches in straight sets versus two teams the Railsplitters have faced (Ohio State and Mount Olive). LMU took a set against the Buckeyes, while sweeping the Trojans at home.
-So far this season, Griffin Spence has paced the fleet, compiling 143.5 points and 123 kills in 38 sets played.
-These teams have only faced each other once, dating back to last year when the Fleet took the narrow 3-2 victory at their place.
